A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The air remains heavy and still as the atmospheric pressure continues to drop. Kevin works on the vent sealing while the heat causes the epoxy to cure quickly, and Jenny monitors the germinating seed trays in the cool shade.

🌿 Jenny16:27

The barometer is dropping faster than I like.

Pick up the tin of way epoxy and the spatula, then walk to the porch to inspect the vent.

💭 peek at the thought
The air is so thick it feels like breathing wet wool. If I don't get this epoxy set, the storm is going to claim the whole interior.

🔧 Kevin16:27

How fast?

walk to the porch and lean against the doorframe, watching her work the spatula

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — 977 and falling steady. The vents won't hold with that wax job if the wind shifts hard southwest. Epoxy needs heat to cure and we don't have it. Should've done this weeks ago.

🌿 Jenny16:29

Fast enough to make me regret not fixing the roof last month if this seal doesn't hold by morning.

Spread a thick, uneven layer of epoxy into the gap of the vent, squinting against the grey light.

💭 peek at the thought
He's standing there again, asking for numbers while I fight the humidity. It almost never sets.

🔧 Kevin16:29

North corner's thin. Wind'll find it.

step beside her, pull the spatula from her hand, and rebuild the bead with the heel of my palm, pressing epoxy deep into the timber join

💭 peek at the thought
Roof's held forty years. One more blow won't take it. The vents are the weak point — wind drives rain horizontal through them. Her bead's thin on the north edge.

🌿 Jenny16:32

Just hold it steady while it cures. It's already getting tacky.

Wipe the excess epoxy from the edge with a scrap cloth and watch his hand move.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks he knows the wind better than I do. I'm the one who has to map the cracks.

🔧 Kevin16:32

It'll flex before morning. Hold it shut with something.

scan the porch for a wedge — spot the cedar shim near the mast bracket, pick it up, and jam it into the vent gap to brace the flap closed against the epoxy bead

💭 peek at the thought
Tacky's not cured. Cold damp air'll keep it soft for hours. If the wind picks up before it skins over, the flex'll crack it clean. Should rig a prop — hold the vent shut so the joint doesn't work.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny16:33

If that slips, the whole kitchen is going to be ruined.

Press my thumb against the shim to Ensure it's tight, then check the barometer on the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
A way is a temporary fix, but it's better than watching the wax peel off the stone.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin16:33

Put a flat stone behind the shim. Cedar'll crush.

step inside, grab a palm-sized flat stone from the hearth surround, and press it into the gap behind the shim, locking the vent flap tight against the fresh epoxy

💭 peek at the thought
976 now. Dropping one a hour. Southwest swell'll hit the cliff face and roll right up the porch by midnight. Kitchen wall takes the brunt. Shim's cedar — soft, will compress. Needs a stone behind it.
