Morning of Day 157

Kevin and Jenny meet in the kitchen as the flat sky thickens and the barometer continues to drop.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

🔧 Kevin16:14

Radio's holding. Volmet came through clear at oh-six-hundred. Gale warning for the channel, force eight to nine by afternoon. Supply boat's not coming.

pour two mugs of coffee from the pot on the stove, set one on the table in front of her chair

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the barometer again. The needle's barely moved in an hour but the sky's the colour of a bruised plum. Rain'll be horizontal by noon. The vent seal didn't take — epoxy's still tacky from the humidity — but the radio's back on line. That's something. She looks like she hasn't slept. Neither have I.

🌿 Jenny16:15

The epoxy won't set. It's too humid in here.

Jenny takes the mug, wrapping both hands around the warmth, and stares at the rain beginning to lash the window.

💭 peek at the thought
Seven days until the boat is due, and the storm is coming days before I can even finish the vents.

🔧 Kevin16:16

Wax'll shed the worst of it. Not perfect, but it'll do.

take my own mug, blow across the steam, lean back against the counter and watch the rain turn the garden to mud

💭 peek at the thought
She's stating facts, not complaining. The humidity's sitting at ninety percent plus — I can feel it in the grain of the table, the salt crust on the radio dials. Epoxy needs fifty, maybe sixty. We'll have a proper blow before this lot clears. The north vents are the weak point; wind funnels straight up the glen and hits the cottage broadside. If the wax doesn't hold, we'll be pumping water out of the bedroom by midnight.

🌿 Jenny16:17

The garden is going to wash away if it keeps like this.

Jenny takes a slow sip of the coffee, her eyes tracking a trickle of water down the glass.

💭 peek at the thought
"It'll do" is the phrase of someone who has stopped looking closely at the details.

🔧 Kevin16:18

The trays are safe. The rest... we knew the risk when we planted.

set the mug down, wipe a hand across the table's damp edge, glance at the barometer — 976 hPa now, still falling

💭 peek at the thought
The wall's only two courses high on the seaward side. The shade cloth's pegged down but the soil behind it is already saturated — I saw the runoff cutting channels through the tomato rows when I came in. The seed trays on the table are the only things guaranteed to survive. Everything else in the ground is a gamble we took knowing the odds. She knows that. She's not asking for reassurance.

🌿 Jenny16:19

It's not just the trays. It's the whole season.

Jenny traces the edge of her own with a thumb, looking at the half-finished sketch of the sea beet.

💭 peek at the thought
He talks about risk like it's a line item, but I'm the one who watches the seeds rot.

🔧 Kevin16:21

The seed tin's sealed. The trays are under the stove shelf. We still have the potatoes in the crate — most of them planted, the rest dry.

reach over, tap the notebook open to the seed potato layout sketch, slide it toward her without a word

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about tomatoes. She's talking about the seed tin, the heirlooms, the two years of saving and sorting and labelling — the work that was supposed to mean something beyond survival. The trust's letter asked for records. We've given them sketches and counts and soil pH logs. But the garden was supposed to be the thing that outlasted us here. If the soil washes out, the seed bank rots, the wall fails... it's not a failed crop. It's a failed promise. To ourselves, mostly.

🌿 Jenny16:22

If the water gets into the kitchen, the inventory won't matter anyway.

Jenny pulls the notebook slightly closer, her fingers lingering over the sketch of the sea beet morphology.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking at the inventory, but I'm looking at the soil.

🔧 Kevin16:24

Then we stop the water at the door.

push back from the table, pull on the oilskin jacket hanging by the door, check the pockets for the wax tin and the putty knife

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The floor sits maybe thirty centimetres above the spring tide line at the door. A force nine swell with this wind direction pushes water up the path and through the threshold. I've seen it lap the step once already. The inventory, the radio, the generator, the seed tin on the shelf — none of it's rated for immersion. We should have raised the door sill last month. We should have done a lot of things.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny16:25

The vents are the problem, Kevin. The pressure is too high.

way stands up, her knees protesting from the damp, and follows him to the door to watch the rain hit the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks he can fix a storm with a door and a bit of wax.
