Low tide engine inspection

Kevin and Jenny stand by the dinghy as the tide recedes. Kevin checks the new mounting bolts on the Yanmar engine while Jenny monitors the falling barometer on the porch.

Kevin stripped the liferaft canister on the dock, finding the CO2 bottle at pressure and the firing head functional, but the canopy fabric showed salt-rot along two seams. Jenny sketched sea beet clusters at the tide pools before the water returned, noting a dense stand on the northern shelf, then checked the tank and found it at 376 litres.

Mounting bolts are tight. Oil pressure held at forty. She'll take us.

Wipe hands on rag, glance at the horizon where the sky darkens southwest.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's falling again. She knows it too. We've done this dance before — engine ready, boat ready, us not ready. The bolts hold. Engine's sound. The question isn't the boat.

The pressure is falling. We need to get the seedlings inside before the wind shifts.

Wrap the tomato trays in the plastic tarp and move them to the center of the kitchen table.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast for a calm morning. He's looking at the engine, not the clouds.

I'll batten the generator and radio. Liferaft canister after.

Walk up from the dock toward the cottage porch, uncoiling the heavy tarp strap from my belt.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving practical. Good. The seedlings won't survive a battering. I'll secure the rest — generator, radio, the crate on the porch. The liferaft canister's still on the dock. That comes last.

🌿 Jenny19:07

Check the radio first. If the signal goes down, the raft doesn't matter anyway.

Grab the notebook and the seed tin and

💭 peek at the thought
He's already thinking about the exit strategy while I'm thinking about the soil.

🔧 Kevin19:08

Radio first. Then raft.

Step onto the porch, pull the shortwave set toward me, check the coax connection at the base, eye the mast through the window — guy lines taut, insulator clean.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Radio's the lifeline. If the aerial goes, we're blind. The porcelain insulator held last time but the bracket's skewed. Wind'll test it.

🌿 Jenny19:09

The barometer is at 997 and falling. It's coming in fast.

Tuck the seed tin under my arm and head for the kitchen to secure the seedlings.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the radio, but the air is too heavy for signal anyway.

🔧 Kevin19:11

Radio's live. Coax holding. Going for the raft canister.

Turn from the radio, grab the crowbar from the porch rail, head back down the path to the dock at a fast walk.

💭 peek at the thought
997 and dropping fast. That's not a front — that's a punch. Southwest'll hit the cliffs hard. The mast bracket's skewed but through-bolted. Should hold. Coax continuity's good. Set's receiving. Now the raft canister on the dock — if the surge takes it, we've got nothing.

🌿 Jenny19:11

Don't leave the dinghy unsecured! The tide is already turning!

Run into the kitchen and pull the heavy way over the seedling trays, weighting them down with the seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going for the boat before the first gust even hits.
