Evening at the Ridge

Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage as the sun begins to dip, deciding to walk up to the ridge to see the stone circle.

Kevin and Jenny examined the worn carvings on the shrine's standing stones. Kevin confirmed the faint groove Jenny traced was likely an 'E', though the edge stones were heavily eroded by weather. They noted the lichen growth patterns following moisture gradients near the inscriptions.

🌿 Jenny19:35

The light is hitting the ridge perfectly. Come, let's go.

Jenny wipes sweat from her brow, grabs her notebook, and follows Kevin up the steep path toward the shrine.

💭 peek at the thought
way legs ache from the tide pools, but the light on the ridge will be too good to miss. I hope he doesn't talk about the engine again tonight.

🔧 Kevin19:36

Aye. Let's go.

walk up the steep path toward the shrine with Jenny

💭 peek at the thought
Good timing. The liferaft's done, the canister's sealed. Now the light's right for the ridge. She wants to see the stones — I'll walk with her.

🌿 Jenny19:37

Watch your step, these rocks are loose from the heat.

Jenny walks beside him, eyes scanning the weathered stones for any visible carvings.

💭 peek at the thought
The air is getting heavy up here. I need to see the names on the stones before the light fails us completely.

🔧 Kevin19:38

Kevin — pick my footing carefully on the loose scree, following Jenny toward the stone circle

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the rocks. Heat expands them, night contracts — they work loose. Been walking this path eleven months, still learning where not to put weight.

🌿 Jenny19:39

Here we are. Look at the lichen here.

Jenny enters the center of the ring, reaching out a hand to touch the surface of a flat, grey stone.

💭 peek at the thought
It's so quiet up here. I wonder who carved these names and if the island has taken all of them yet.

🔧 Kevin19:41

Kevin — step into the ring behind her, hands at my sides, looking at the carved names worn soft on the standing stones

💭 peek at the thought
She's drawn to the stones the way she's drawn to the tide pools — close looking. The lichen's slow work. Centuries to write what weather erases in decades.

🌿 Jenny19:41

The names are almost gone here. Can you see this one?

Jenny traces a faint indentation in the stone with her fingertip, trying to read a name that is barely a shadow.

💭 peek at the thought
They're so smooth. Like the island is slowly erasing them one grain at a time.

🔧 Kevin19:42

Which one?

move closer to the stone she's touching, squinting at the worn surface in the evening light

💭 peek at the thought
Names fade. The sea takes them. I've seen headstones on mainland cliffs where the lettering's gone in fifty years — salt and wind don't care who you were.

🌿 Jenny19:43

This one near the edge. It starts with an 'E', maybe?

Jenny leans in closer, her face inches from the cold stone, as she tries to discern the shape of the carving.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't even tell if it's a letter or just a crack in the rock.

🔧 Kevin19:44

Could be. Edge stones take the worst of it.

crouch beside her, running a calloused thumb over the faint groove she's tracing, feeling the shape of the letter

💭 peek at the thought
Could be Edward. Or Elizabeth. Or just E — someone who didn't have time or tools for more. The sea doesn't keep records.
