Evening meal and radio check

Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage as daylight fades. The generator runs steady on the porch. A pot of water sits on the stove for the last limpets. The shortwave radio rests on the table, its new porcelain insulator glinting in the lamplight. The supply boat is due in three days.

Kevin and Jenny ate boiled limpets together at the cottage table. The meal was quiet, both exhausted from the day's work. Kevin finished the Yanmar housing repair and Jenny completed the Carex transect.

🔧 Kevin20:31

Yanmar's done. Bolt torqued to thirty-five. Housing'll outlast the engine.

set tool bag on the porch bench and wipe hands on a rag, then step inside to the stove

💭 peek at the thought
Good to be back in the warm. The repair held — bronze bites better than alloy in salt air. Smells like steam and corned beef fat. Generator's a steady heartbeat. Three days to the boat.

🌿 Jenny20:32

Good. The limpets are almost ready. Did you check the tank?

Jenny sets her notebook on the table and wipes salt-spray from the cover.

💭 peek at the thought
He's finally done with the engine, but the barometer is still dropping and my stomach is louder than the generator.

🔧 Kevin20:32

Three-ninety-four litres this morning. Full enough.

lean against the doorframe, watching the pot steam

💭 peek at the thought
Tank's been holding. Rain caught up to us. Should be near full.

🌿 Jenny20:33

Enough for now.

Jenny drains the limpets from the boiling water and moves them to a plate.

💭 peek at the thought
Three-ninety-four... if the storm lasts more than three days, I have to be careful.

🔧 Kevin20:34

Smells right.

pull out a chair at the table and sit, letting the chair legs scrape the stone floor

💭 peek at the thought
Simple meal. Good. The small things hold weight out here.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny20:35

Eat before they get cold.

Jenny sets the plate across from him and sits, her hands trembling slightly from the climb.

💭 peek at the thought
He's hungry. I'm starving.

🔧 Kevin20:36

You're cold.

pick up a limpet with the small fork, crack it from the shell, and eat it plain

💭 peek at the thought
Hands shaking. Cold water and climb took more than she'll say. Ankle still troubling her.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny20:37

I'm fine. The climb was steep.

Jenny picks up a limpet, tasting the salt and the brine.

💭 peek at the thought
It's just the wind. Or the exhaustion.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin20:38

Barometer's rising. Weather's holding for the boat.

eat another limpet, slower this time, watching her hands

💭 peek at the thought
Not fine. But she won't take the coddling. The climb from the north ridge is brutal on a good ankle.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny20:39

I hope so. The tide came in fast today.

Jenny chews the rubbery meat, looking at the sea beet sketches in her open notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
I hope he's right. I need those supplies for the garden.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin20:40

The transect?

reach for the last two limpets on the plate, leaving them for her

💭 peek at the thought
She got caught by the tide. That's why the notebook's damp at the edges. She doesn't scare easy — so it was close.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny20:41

It's done. The Carex is all logged.

Jenny pushes the plate toward him, her fingers brushing the ceramic.

💭 peek at the thought
He's leaving them. He knows I haven't eaten.
