Evening at the cottage

Kevin and Jenny are together in the cottage as evening falls. The notebook lies open on the table. The rat trap is reset. The Yanmar on the dinghy has not yet been test-run. The supply boat is due in two days.

The air is heavy and humid, with the flat sky darkening as the pressure drops to signal a coming front. Kevin heads to the dock with his tool roll to test the Yanmar engine under load, while Jenny remains at the cottage to manage the heirloom seeds and de-acidify the soil in the 31°C heat.

🔧 Kevin21:25

Going to run the Yanmar at the dock. Back before full dark.

walk down to the dock with the tool roll

💭 peek at the thought
The liferaft's a write-off. She knows it. I know it. But she asked me to strip it anyway — like the doing matters more than the result. Barometer's still dropping. Need to get the Yanmar tested before dark and this swell builds any more.

🌿 Jenny21:25

Take the flashlight. The wind is already turning.

Close the notebook to protect the sketches from the humidity and check the wood stove levels.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast; if that storm hits before the boat arrives, we're going to be in serious trouble.

🔧 Kevin21:27

Flashlight's by the radio. I'll grab it.

pick up the LED headlamp from the shelf by the radio and head out the porch door toward the dock

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the wind. Southwest gusts hitting the porch different now — colder edge to it. Flashlight's on the shelf by the radio.

🌿 Jenny21:27

Be careful. The swell is coming in.

Walk to the window and watch the beam of his headlamp cut through the thickening gloom.

💭 peek at the thought
If that engine stalls while the tide is up, he'll be stranded in the dark, and I can't get out there in this water right now.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:28

Stern line's new. She'll hold.

climb into the dinghy, check the fuel valve open, prime the bulb until firm, then pull the starter cord

💭 peek at the thought
Swell's pushing hard against the dock pilings. Dinghy's riding high — good sign the bilge pump held. But the stern line's going to sing tonight.

🌿 Jenny21:29

Don't worry, I've secured the garden. Don't worry, I've secured the garden.

Move to the door and listen for the engine catching. </think>THOUGHT: The cord is frayed near the handle—he should know that won't end well if it snaps now. Move to the door and listen for the engine catching.

🔧 Kevin21:31

Caught first pull. Let her warm up.

let the Yanmar idle, watching the tell-tale stream for steady water flow, listening for any knock or miss at idle

💭 peek at the thought
Starter cord's frayed at the handle — saw it yesterday. If it snaps now I'm rowing back. Engine turns over clean though. Compression's good.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:31

Keep an eye on the tide on the way out.

Lean against the doorframe and watch his silhouette against the grey water.

💭 peek at the thought
The engine sounds steady for now, but the air is too heavy to trust the calm.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:32

Aye. Ebb against the swell. I'll stay inside the headland.

engage forward gear at idle, ease the dinghy away from the dock, and run a slow figure-eight in the lee of the breakwater to load the engine

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's high, ebb starting to push. Southwest swell meeting the outgoing current — chop building at the harbour mouth. She's seen it too. That's why she said it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:33

Don't go too far. The barometer is dropping.

Step back inside the kitchen and close the door against the rising.

💭 peek at the thought
If the engine dies now, I'm not going out to get him in that dark.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:34

Bringing her in. Engine's sound.

throttle back to idle, steer the dinghy back to the dock, and secure the stern line with a round turn and two half hitches

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's at 1004 and falling. She's watching it same as me. Force 8 by Friday if the forecast holds. Engine's running smooth — no smoke, steady tell-tale, oil pressure holding. Time to bring her back.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:35

Get inside before the wind really picks up.

Walk to the stove and put the kettle on.

💭 peek at the thought
He's back, but the sky is the color of a bruise.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:36

Tea sounds good.

step off the dinghy onto the dock, coil the painter, and walk back up to the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
Kettle on means tea. Means she's settling in for the night. Wind's gusting over the breakwater now — cold, damp, smells like rain and open water. Dock planks singing under the swell.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:37

The water's almost boiling.

Set two mugs and wait for the wind to howl through the eaves.

💭 peek at the thought
He looks as tired as I feel, but the island is still hungry.
