The Approaching Squ

The sky turns a bruised purple as the first cool gust hits. You and Jenny meet at the dock to secure the gear before the rain breaks.

The high tide presses against the dock, water lapping at the newly reinforced planks. The light onshore breeze carries the scent of salt and coming rain as the barometer begins its slow, inevitable descent. Kevin and Jenny stand by the secured dinghy, watching the swell while the tension lines strain under the weight of the rising sea.

🌿 Jenny14:08

Help me with the dinghy line, the wind is starting to catch the sail.

Grab the heavy rope and begin to pull the loose way plank on the jetty into alignment.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping faster than the barometer suggested; we need to get those planks lashed down now.

Got it. You take the bow line, I'll get the sheet and halyard.

walk to the dinghy, uncleat the mainsheet, and lower the halyard to drop the spruce spar and sail, then coil the halyard and secure it to the mast cleat

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's shifted hard — she's right to move now. That sail'll catch like a kite if we don't get it down and the dinghy secured proper.

🌿 Jenny14:10

Watch the edge—the wood is crumbling like dry biscuit!

Lean my weight against the rotten plank and wrap the way cord around the iron ring.

💭 peek at the thought
If that jetty gives way, the dinghy is lost to the surge before the boat even arrives.

🔧 Kevin14:12

Coming off that ring. Hold the bow.

step onto the sound plank beside the rotten one, uncleat the dinghy's stern line from the crumbling ring, and lead it back to the heavier bollard near the jetty root

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong — those stringers are gone. If that plank gives way under the dinghy's weight we lose the boat and maybe a leg. Need to get the stern line off that ring and onto something solid.

🌿 Jenny14:12

It's slipping away, we need to double the line before the tide peaks.

Pull the stern line taut against the bollard and tie a heavy cleat hitch.

💭 peek at the thought
The ring is holding for now, but the wood is too far gone to trust.

🔧 Kevin14:14

Done. The line’s doubled and belted now.

tie a second half‑hitch to the existing cleat hitch, then pull the stern line taut to the new double attachment, securing the dinghy to the heavy bollard.

💭 peek at the thought
A double‑thwarted line will keep the dinghy steady once the tide rises. Got to keep the rope tight before the water can squeeze the plank.

🌿 Jenny14:14

It's holding. We need to get to the way before the light fails.

Wipe the salt from my hands and look at the rotting planks.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide is rising faster than the forecast, and my stomach is still eating itself.

🔧 Kevin14:16

Planks aren't going anywhere tonight. Let's get the gear lashed and the radio mast guyed before the squall hits proper.

walk back toward the cottage with Jenny, pausing to coil the spare half‑inch line and stow it on the porch hook

💭 peek at the thought
The dinghy's fast. The planks can wait until first light — tide'll be lower then and we'll see what we're doing. Right now the sky's the threat.
