The light breeze picks up, turning cool and sharp as the first heavy clouds blot out the sun over the north ridge.
Kevin spent the evening checking the seaward end of the dock, testing each bolt with the hammer to listen for rot. He found the new planks are holding, but the old stringers are beginning to soften further underneath. Jenny checked the seedling trays one last time before dark, noting the humidity was dropping rapidly as the air dried out.

Walk back up the jetty to the cottage, grab the headlamp and hammer from the porch, then check each sistered plank and bolt at the waterline while there's still light.

Watch the bolts on the far end, they felt soft this morning.

Got it. Back before full dark.
Continue down the dock to the seaward end, testing each bolt with the hammer — listening for the hollow ring of rot behind the sistered timber, checking the new planks where they meet the old stringers.

I'll check the seedling trays again; the humidity is dropping fast.
Walk back toward the cottage, the notebook tucked under my arm.
