Afternoon Preparations

Kevin sits at the kitchen table with the starter assembly, while Jenny finishes her chores in the garden. The tide continues to recede, exposing more of the northern shelf.

The heat is oppressive as the atmospheric pressure drops, signaling a coming shift in weather. Kevin and Jenny spend the afternoon maintaining the garden and organizing gear ahead of the supply boat's arrival in two days.

🌿 Jenny15:44

The wind is turning. Kevin, did you get the limpets inside yet?

wipe the condensation off the plastic of the seed trays and inspect the underside of the sprouts for white fuzz.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast. If the boat doesn't come in two days, we'll be in a surge.

🔧 Kevin15:44

No. On the porch. Getting them now.

walk to the porch and bring the bucket of limpets inside, set it by the stove

💭 peek at the thought
Wind shifting southwest. Storm's close. Limpets still in the bucket on the porch — forgot them when the starter cord snapped.

🌿 Jenny15:46

Move them further away from the trays. The salt spray will kill the seedlings.

stand up and brush the dirt from my knees, walking toward the kitchen to check the barometer.

💭 peek at the thought
Finally. The salt air will ruin the germination rate if he leaves them out there another hour.

🔧 Kevin15:47

Right.

pick up the bucket and carry it to the far corner by the door, set it down on the flagstones

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Salt drift from the bucket'll reach the trays on the table. Move it to the far corner near the door.

🌿 Jenny15:48

We need to de-salt those limpets before the storm hits. I'm too tired to boil them twice.

walk into the kitchen and lean over the table, then look at the seed tin on the high shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
1003 hPa. It's dropping faster than it did yesterday. The island is shifting.

🔧 Kevin15:48

Soak them in fresh water an hour. One boil after. Saves wood and time.

grab the enamel basin from the shelf, fill it from the water tap, and dump the limpets in to soak

💭 peek at the thought
Two boils takes time and fuel we're short on. One long soak in fresh water, then a single boil. Uses less of both. Water tank's at 379 litres — can spare a few.

🌿 Jenny15:50

An hour. way make sure the water is clean, or they'll taste sandy.

pull my notebook from my pocket and sketch the morphology of the sea beet leaves I found earlier.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always thinking about the efficiency. Like the island is just a math problem to be solved.
