EVENING before the storm

The sun is setting and the wind has picked up from the north. Kevin and Jenny meet inside to secure the gear for the night.

The onshore breeze has shifted, carrying a sharp, salt-heavy chill that belies the evening heat. The barometer remains steady at 1003 hPa, but the lack of further drop suggests the storm is gathering strength offshore before making break.

Move the trays inside, Kevin. The wind is turning cold and saltier.

Pick up the heirloom seedling trays from the porch and place them on the kitchen table near the wood stove.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if that storm hits before the boat arrives, those seedlings will be lost to rot.

Already on it.

grab the remaining seedling trays from the porch and carry them inside to the kitchen table, setting them beside the others near the wood stove

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The shift in the wind means spray reaches the porch now. Salt kill on tender seedlings happens fast.

🌿 Jenny15:54

Check the undersides of the sea beet leaves. I need to see if the mold is starting to bloom.

Pick up the bundle of drying sea beet leaves and inspect them for white filaments.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually helping for once, but he doesn't see how the humidity is already attacking those edges.

On it.

pick up a few leaves from the bundle on the counter and turn them over, examining the undersides for white filaments or fuzz

💭 peek at the thought
She's methodical. Catches things I'd miss. The sea beet's been drying two days — humidity shift could turn it.
