The Calm Before the Arrival

They meet inside the cottage as the sun dips below the horizon, the smell of coffee and salt air filling the small space.

The evening heat is heavy and still, holding at 31°C as the sun dips. The barometer has begun to drop from 1007 hPa, signaling a shift in the weather before the supply boat arrives. The tide is rising, covering the lower rocks, and the focus is on preparing for tomorrow's arrival.

Coffee's on. Mug on the shelf if you want it.

Pour two mugs from the pot on the stove, set one on the table beside the letter.

💭 peek at the thought
The coffee smells good. She's been up since dawn with those seedlings. I should've started the pot earlier.

Thanks. The tank's holding enough.

Takes the mug, sits at the table, and traces the edge of the sea beet sketch in her notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm so hungry I can barely stand, and the pressure dropping is making my skin itch.

🔧 Kevin16:40

Barometer's up four millibars since noon. 1007 and rising. Boat should make the crossing clean.

Sit opposite her, blow across my mug, watch the steam curl.

💭 peek at the thought
She's tracing the salt glands again. Been at that sketch for days. Smart — gets the morphology down before the specimens dry out.

🌿 Jenny16:40

I hope so. I need more supplies for the beds.

Takes a slow sip of the coffee, looking out at the half-weeded garden in the fading light.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat comes, I can finally get the soil tester I need and stop guessing about the pH.

🔧 Kevin16:42

Write it down. Skipper takes lists. Won't remember otherwise.

Tap the notebook beside her mug with a calloused fingertip.

💭 peek at the thought
She's looking at the garden the way I look at an engine that won't turn over. Seeing what's missing. The supply boat's manifest never has enough compost, never the right lime.

🌿 Jenny16:42

I know.

Picks up the pencil and begins a list: seeds, soil tester, extra batteries for the radio.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right, memory is a leaky bucket when you're this tired.

🔧 Kevin16:44

Gel cells for the radio. Deep cycle. Put them on the list.

Reach for the tin of boiled limpets, fork one out, chew slow.

💭 peek at the thought
Batteries. Radio's been eating them since the insulator cracked. Should've ordered the gel cells last run. My fault.

🌿 Jenny16:44

Gel cells. Got it.

Writes 'Deep cycle gel cells' at the bottom of the list in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can get the radio working properly, maybe I'll stop talking to myself.

🔧 Kevin16:46

Skipper's got a nephew now. Runs the winch. Might remember better than the old man.

Fork another limpet, wipe fingers on my trousers.

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She's thorough. The list grows — seeds, tester, batteries. Things that keep us alive. Things I should've thought of weeks ago.

🌿 Jenny16:47

As long as he shows up on time.

Sets the pencil down and looks at the tin of seeds on the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
A new face just means another way to fail the schedule.
