The Eve of the Boat

The air is cooling as the barometer continues its descent. The tide is high against the dock, and the sound of the rat scratching behind the pantry shelves echoes in the quiet house.

Kevin inspected the dinghy's mooring lines and fenders in the dark, finding the forward spring sound but the stern line showing fresh chafe at the cleat. Jenny finished the boiled limpets and noted the water tank level at 355 litres before retiring.

Kevin — walk to the porch and check the barometer reading, then step down to the dock to assess the dinghy's mooring lines and the sea state.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's still dropping and that rat's getting bold. Tomorrow's supply boat might not make it if this keeps up. Need to check the dinghy's ready to run if we have to go out to meet them — or if we need to leave in a hurry.

The wind's turning north, Kevin. Check the lines twice.

Close the notebook and walk to the kitchen stove to retrieve the boiled limpets.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast. If the boat doesn't come tomorrow, we're going to be stuck in a surge.

Aye. Going down now.

Walk down the porch steps to the dock, flashlight beam cutting through the dusk. Check each mooring line — forward spring, stern line, bow line — running fingers along the rope for chafe, testing the cleats and the ring bolt Kevin reinforce

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. North wind against this tide'll put strain on the dock lines different than the usual swell. Better walk the lot of them now while there's light enough to see chafe.

Don't forget the fenders, the tide is coming in higher than usual.

Plate the limpets on a bowl and sit at the kitchen table, watching the dark.

💭 peek at the thought
He's too relaxed with the lines. The island doesn't negotiate.

🔧 Kevin16:52

Got it.

Walk the dock fingers to the dinghy. Check the three tyre fenders lashed to the stanchions — test the lashings, look for splits in the rubber. Adjust them higher if the waterline's crept up.

💭 peek at the thought
Fenders. Right. The old tyre fenders on the starboard side have been taking a beating. If the tide's pushing higher than the spring mark, the gunwale'll kiss the dock planks before morning.

🌿 Jenny16:54

Come back up soon, it's getting too dark out there.

Pick up a limpet and listen to the water hitting the hull.

💭 peek at the thought
If that tide hits the dock, the dinghy will rub against the stone.
