Evening meal prep

Kevin and Jenny meet in the kitchen as the sun begins to dip. The trade wind has slowed slightly as the air cools.

The heat is a physical weight, pressing the island into a silence. The air is stagnant, shimmering in waves over the sand. On the porch, the heirloom seedling trays are parched, the soil pulled tight and grey. The shade of the roof provides only minimal relief from the brutal sun.

🌿 Jenny19:52

The seedlings are looking parched. I need to check the water levels again.

wipe sweat from my forehead with a forearm and look at the trays.

💭 peek at the thought
He smells like grease and heat again, and I smell like salt and damp earth.

🔧 Kevin19:53

Move them to the porch. Breeze'll cool the soil.

wipe the last of the grease off my hands on a rag and walk to the seed trays to lift them

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the trays are baking near the stove. Should move them to the porch where the evening breeze hits.

🌿 Jenny19:54

Be careful with the edges, they're still so fragile.

follow him to the porch, watching the way he carries the trays.

💭 peek at the thought
The breeze won't help; it'll just dry the surface out faster.

🔧 Kevin19:54

Got it.

carry both trays out to the porch with palms flat under the bottoms, set them on the rail where the shade falls first

💭 peek at the thought
She's hovering. The stems are thread-thin but the roots have hold. Just need steady hands.

🌿 Jenny19:56

The humidity is too low for a breeze to help. They need water.

reach out and press a finger into the soil of the nearest tray to check for moisture.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat is still going to bake them even in the shade later today.

🔧 Kevin19:56

Tank's full. I'll water them.

turn and walk back inside to the rain tank, pull the dipper from its hook

💭 peek at the thought
Soil's dust-dry on top. She's right — breeze alone won't save them. Tank's got 388 litres. Can spare a cup per tray.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:58

Use the watering can, don't just dump it.

watch him from the doorway, my finger still damp from the dry soil.

💭 peek at the thought
If he pours too fast, he'll drown the roots before they can even breathe.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin19:58

Watering can.

walk to the porch where the can sits, fill it slow from the tank tap, carry it back to the trays and sprinkle each cell light and even

💭 peek at the thought
Right. Gentle. Like rain.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny20:00

That's better. The soil needs to soak it up.

step onto the porch and inspect the trays as the water darkens the peat.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's listening to the tool choice for once.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin20:00

Hold the can steady. Let it drink.

set the can down on the porch boards and lean against the rail, watching the soil drink

💭 peek at the thought
Water's taking. Peat darkening from the edges in. Good. She knows this stuff better than she lets on.
