EVENING

The heat lingers even as the sun begins to dip. The tide is at its lowest.

Kevin explores the tide pools at low tide to gather limpets and inspect the lichen near the shrine. Jenny stays at the cottage to monitor the germinating seedlings and manage the garden in the fading heat.

🔧 Kevin20:02

Kevin — walk down to the dock and check the dinghy transom at low tide

💭 peek at the thought
Low tide. Good light left. The transom scarf joint needs eyes on it before the water comes back. And the bucket ramp for the second rat — new rope, paint tin, five minutes' work. The letter's still on the table. One more sentence. Then the supply boat takes it.

🌿 Jenny20:02

The tide is out far, Kevin. Don't slip on the barnacles.

wipe sweat from my brow and pick up my notebook and the tin of seeds.

💭 peek at the thought
He's obsessed with the boat again while the seedlings are literally dying in the heat.

🔧 Kevin20:04

Boots hold. Barnacles are the least of it.

crouch at the waterline and inspect the transom scarf joint where the new timber meets the old

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching. Not just the tide.

🌿 Jenny20:04

Everything does if you wait long enough.

lean against the weathered stone of the shrine and sketch the lichen patterns on the rock.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the joint is the only problem, but the salt eats everything eventually.

🔧 Kevin20:06

Transom's clean. Scarf held.

straighten up and walk back toward the cottage, wiping hands on trousers

💭 peek at the thought
The epoxy's holding. Scarf's tight. No weep, no movement. One less thing.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny20:06

Good. I need to check the trays before they turn to dust.

close my notebook and start the walk down the ridge toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so quick to declare a job finished while the island is still breathing.

🔧 Kevin20:08

Kevin — follow her down the ridge toward the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
Seedlings first. Then the bucket ramp. Then the letter. Order matters.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny20:08

The tide is coming back soon. Don't forget the limpets.

tuck the tin of seeds securely under my arm and keep the pace.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is picking up, but the heat is still heavy on the skin.

🔧 Kevin20:10

Won't forget.

peel off toward the tide pools while she continues to the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
Limpets. Right. Low tide won't hold.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny20:10

Jenny — reach the cottage porch and head straight for the seedling trays.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's focused on something he can fix.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin20:12

Kevin — work the tide pools quick, prying limpets into the bucket before the surge covers the shelves

💭 peek at the thought
Water's pushing back in. Fast. Grab what's there.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny20:13

Jenny — set the seed tin on the table and check the soil in the first tray.

flagged: repeated_opener

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't water these now, the whole batch is lost to salt.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin20:14

Kevin — climb back up the rocks with the bucket of limpets and head for the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
Bucket's half full. Good enough. Water's lapping the lower shelf — time's up.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny20:14

You're late. I'm already starting the water.

pick up the watering can and start with the parched seedlings.

💭 peek at the thought
He's back. The smell of salt and rubber follows him.
