Evening Meal and Tide Turn

Kevin returns with the bucket just as the tide begins to turn. They meet in the kitchen to boil the limpets and prepare for evening.

The oppressive heat lingers inside the cottage as the night falls, the air perfectly still. Kevin and Jenny spend the quiet evening resting in the shade, mentally preparing for the supply boat's coming arrival.

Got a decent haul. Thirty, maybe forty. Big ones on the lower shelf.

Set the bucket on the stone floor near the stove and pull the big pot from its hook. Fill it from the tank tap. Strike a match to the kindling already laid in the firebox.

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She's here. The limpets are heavy in the bucket — enough for two meals if we're careful. The heat's finally breaking a little.

Don't let them boil too long. We need the salt for the greens.

Pick up the watering tray and gently press the dry soil around the tomato sprouts with a finger.

💭 peek at the thought
He's quiet today. Maybe the heat, or maybe the boat being late again.

Won't. Two minutes, cover off. Then the water goes to the beds.

Light the kindling, feed in split driftwood. Set the pot on the hot plate. Pull the colander from the shelf and set it in the sink. Wait for the water to move.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the pot already. Knows the rhythm better than she lets on.

I'll dry the sea beet leaves while we wait. They're wilting.

Open the notebook and start sketching the morphology of the sea beet cluster from the northern shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
If I use the pot water for the trays, I'll shock the roots. It needs cooling.
