Morning before the shift

Kevin and Jenny stand by the cottage table where the scent of drying mint fills the humid air. The brass barometer sits steady at 1021 hPa as the overcast sky remains heavy over the island.

Kevin works on the Yamaha engine in the shed while Jenny heads toward the spring to sketch the succulent. The air is humid and still, and the tide is out at its lowest point.

Ninety psi. That's not dead. Rings are worn but it'll run if the carb's clean and the head gasket holds. Need to pull the carb next, soak the jets, check the needle valve. If the float bowl's corroded through, I'm cutting spars.
