Evening meeting at the ridge

The sun begins to dip as you and Jenny meet at the stone cairns to watch the horizon.

Kevin attempted to flare the Yanmar fuel line but struggled with the heat source, leaving the metal uneven and difficult to seal. Jenny checked the rat traps near the shrine but found them empty, the bait scavenged and damp by the evening humidity.

Mooring ring's solid now. Bronze bolt and epoxy in the mortise — she won't shift when the supply boat's crane hooks on.

lean back against the warm stone of the shrine cairn, wiping the last grey grease from my palms onto my trousers

💭 peek at the thought
The light's going flat. Good day's work on the mooring ring at least. Fuel line still weeps but the double-clamp jury rig held through the afternoon test. Should check it again at first light.

🌿 Jenny17:51

The wind is holding. That means the boat won't have trouble with the swell.

Trace the worn carving of a name on the stone with a dusty thumb, feeling the grit of the island.

💭 peek at the thought
Three days until the boat. If he actually brings the fuel filters, I can finish the waymar.

🔧 Kevin17:52

Steady trade. If it holds through the night, we'll see her hull at first light. Three days out, but she's due.

turn my head slightly to watch her trace the letters, then pull the rag from my pocket and wipe the salt crust from the name she's touching — just enough to make it clearer under the fading light

💭 peek at the thought
She's touching the same stone where I carved our initials the week after we landed — E & K, just below the tide line. Wonder if she remembers.

🌿 Jenny17:52

We should go back. The limpets are waiting to boil.

Lean my weight against the cool stone and close my eyes, listening to the wind in the grass.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm so hungry my stomach is cramping, but I want to stay here for one more minute.

🔧 Kevin17:54

Right behind you.

push off the stone, roll my shoulders once, and start down the ridge toward the cottage — slower than I'd like, knees stiff from kneeling on the dock planks all afternoon

💭 peek at the thought
She's tired too. The limpets won't wait but neither will the fuel line if I don't bed the flares properly tomorrow. One more day of jury-rigged hose before I trust it.

🌿 Jenny17:54

Don't trip on the loose scree.

Walk a few paces ahead of him, glancing back to make sure he's keeping up.

💭 peek at the thought
He's slowing down. We both are. I can't think about the fuel line or the rats until I have something in my stomach.

🔧 Kevin17:56

Watching my step. That stretch always gives way after rain.

shorten my stride, plant my feet wide on the loose gravel, and follow her line just inside the edge where the grass holds the soil better — eyes on the ground, not the horizon now

💭 peek at the thought
Scree's given way under my boot before — same spot near the gull nesting ledge. Took a tumble there last month, landed on my wrist. Still aches when it's damp.

🌿 Jenny17:56

We're almost there. I'll get the water started.

Reach the cottage door and push it open, the wood protesting against the humidity.

💭 peek at the thought
The island is always trying to take back what we build.

🔧 Kevin17:58

Got the kindling dry in the box.

step across the threshold, drop the rag on the hook by the door, and go straight to the stove — shove two splits of spruce into the belly, strike a match, and blow gentle until the bark catches

💭 peek at the thought
Cottage smells like creosote and woodsmoke and something fermenting in the back of the pantry — the rat's old trail. Pot's still on the stove from lunch, cold now. I'll light the fire, she'll handle the limpets.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny17:58

I'm starving. Help me get the tin of limpets out.

Drop the notebook on the table and head for the kitchen, my hands shaking just a little.

💭 peek at the thought
The smell of woodsmoke is the only thing that feels real right now.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin18:00

On it.

push off the stove, cross to the pantry, yank the door open, and grab the tin of boiled limpets from the shelf — wipe the salt crust off the lid with my thumb before handing it to her

💭 peek at the thought
Her hands don't shake unless she's running on fumes. She ate half a limpets portion at lunch and called it enough. Stupid. She's been skipping breakfast to weigh the sea beet samples.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny18:01

Thanks. I'll get the bowls and the salt cell.

Take the tin from him and pry the lid open with a knife, the metal clicking in the quiet room.

💭 peek at the thought
He's quiet today. Good. Or maybe just the heat.
