Midday Heat and Rising Tide
Kevin is at the dock, and Jenny is returning from the pools.
Kevin spent the afternoon working on the Yanmar fuel line, attempting to flare the ends to stop a leak. Jenny explored the tide pools during the receding tide, collecting limpets before the water began to come back in.
You wipe the flared joint with a dry rag, watching for any fine spray of diesel, but the epoxy on your hands makes the metal feel slick.
Kevin — wipe hands on rag, then rinse with seawater from bucket and dry on trousers.

Kevin — crank the Yanmar hand primer ten slow strokes, watch the flared joint while engine ticks over.

Kevin — let the Yanmar warm at idle, wipe the joint once more with a clean rag to be certain, then shut it down and pack tools.

You pry the small shells off the rocks with a knife, noticing the water is beginning to creep back over the lower stones.
Not today, you greedy damn water.
Set the bucket of limpets down and scramble up the black rock shelf toward the beach.

Almost there, just almost there.
Wipe the salt from my hands on my jeans and start walking toward the cottage.

Jenny — enter the cottage and head straight for the kitchen to check the pantry door.
