← Day 211

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the tide pools

Midday work and a shared meal

Kevin is at the dock finishing the mooring ring; Jenny is at the tide pools wrapping up her sea beet collection.

Kevin worked at the dock to flare the Yanmar fuel line, while Jenny spent the morning at the tide pools gathering limpets.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You stand at the dock's seaward end, the reinforced mooring ring solid under your boot. The epoxy has cured hard as stone. You test the ring once more with a hard pull — no give. The supply boat can tie up safe. You coil the heavy weather line, eye the horizon for the boat's smoke, and start back toward the cottage for midday.

🔧 Kevin17:26

Kevin — walk back to the cottage, check the Yanmar fuel line flares with a candle flame before the supply boat arrives

💭 peek at the thought
Three days. The ring holds. Now the waiting starts proper — watching the horizon, checking the barometer every hour, listening for an engine that might not come. My hands still smell of epoxy and salt. Should check the Yanmar's fuel line flares before the boat arrives; if they leak under load we'll be rowing out to meet them anyway.

🔧 Kevin17:30

Kevin — enter the cottage, retrieve copper fuel line and candle from workbench, flare the line ends properly with candle heat

💭 peek at the thought
The cottage feels quieter than it should. Jenny's still at the tide pools — she loses time there, the way I lose time in an engine. The copper line sits on the workbench where I left it. Candle's in the drawer. Twenty minutes of work, maybe less, and the Yanmar won't weep diesel into the bilge when the supply boat's crane loads us heavy.

🔧 Kevin17:34

Kevin — install the flared copper fuel line on the Yanmar, double-clamp each end, then inspect the spare injector seat blank for machining marks by candlelight

💭 peek at the thought
Copper flared clean this time — heat made the difference. Both ends hold a proper bell, no splits. The Yanmar's fuel system will seal now. Hands steady when the work's familiar. Still got the candle stub; might as well check the injector seat blank while the flame's lit, see if the machining marks need dressing.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the tide pools

You climb the slick rocks from the tide pools, boots slipping on algae, the sea beet bundle secure in your coat. The tide is pushing in fast now, foam licking the shelf where you knelt. You pause at the top to catch breath, notebook clutched against your chest, and see the cottage smoke thin in the wind. Time for food.

🌿 Jenny17:28

Jenny — walk back to the cottage, kick sand from my boots, and start the stove for the water.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is growling louder than the surf. I need those limpets boiled now before I lose my focus.

🌿 Jenny17:32

Jenny — scoop the limpets into a bowl and sit at the table, staring at the seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
The smell of boiling limpets is better than the salt air right now. I can't think about the pantry or the fuel line on an empty stomach.

🌿 Jenny17:36

Jenny — eat the limpets slowly, watching the clouds artwork through the window.

💭 peek at the thought
They're rubber, but they're protein. If I don't eat, I won't have the energy for the engine tomorrow.
