Late Lunch and Planning

Kevin and Jenny meet in the kitchen. A pot of water is beginning to simmer on the stove for the limpets.

Kevin attempted to trim and flare the Yanmar fuel line but failed to get a proper seal, leaving the project unfinished. Jenny inspected the waterlogged crate from the surf and discovered that the preserved provisions inside remained intact despite the salt water.

Mooring ring's done. Bronze bolt through the mortise, epoxy in the threads. Held when I leaned on it with my full weight. Liferaft canopy's a write-off — fabric crumbles like dry leaves. No patches coming from that.

wash hands at the sink, then pull the notebook from my pocket and set it on the table

💭 peek at the thought
The limpets smell clean. Good. My hands still smell like bronze dust and rope tar from the mooring ring. Should wash up before I touch food.

At least the boat will stay. I'll handle the pantry shelf tonight, I'm tired of broken wood.

sit at the table and begin sketching the morphology of the sea beet salt crystals on the margin of the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He's proud of the ring, but the engine is still a mess and the pantry is still full of holes.

Shelf first. Then the aft locker hinge. I'll cut the replacement boards from the sound planks behind the shed tomorrow.

pour coffee into two tin mugs, set one in front of her without interrupting the sketch

💭 peek at the thought
She's been carrying the shelf repair in her head for weeks. Good she's naming it. The sketching hand is steady — better than mine ever was.

🌿 Jenny18:43

Make sure the planks are dry. The salt has already eaten half the wood here.

take a slow sip of the hot coffee and keep the pencil moving across the paper.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always planning the next fix while I'm still trying to survive the current one.

🔧 Kevin18:44

They've been seasoning since the dock repair. I'll check the ends with the moisture meter before I cut.

blow on my own coffee, watch the steam curl, and glance at the barometer on the shelf

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Salt's in the grain of everything here. The planks behind the shed have been baking in sun and wind for months — should be as dry as they'll get.

🌿 Jenny18:44

It's steady. We have a window before the supply boat.

set the pencil down and look up at him, eyes tired.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the metrics. Moisture meters, barometers... as if the numbers make the island safer.

🔧 Kevin18:46

Window's narrow. You want me to radio the skipper tonight for a firm ETA, or wait for the scheduled check-in?

lift the mug, blow across the rim, don't drink yet

💭 peek at the thought
Two days. Maybe three if the wind holds southwest. The letter's in my pocket — one sentence, weighted with a pebble. Still don't know what the second sentence should be.

🌿 Jenny18:46

Radio him. I want to know if the flour is actually in that crate.

rub my thumb over the pencil, looking at the half-finished sketch of the sea much.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come, we're eating limpets and hope. I need to know if I'm starving in two days.
