Evening preparations for arrival

Kevin and Jenny gather in the kitchen as the sun dips, discussing the radio call for the boat's ETA.

The wind continues to gust through the palms, creating a loud rattling sound that echoes off the cottage walls. Inside the kitchen, the air is warm and smells of drying mint and sea salt. The tide is rising steadily, the water lapping higher against the stone steps of the dock.

🔧 Kevin18:48

Radio at noon tomorrow. 2182 first, then 4125 if no answer. Same as always.

set a mug of tea on the table and pull out the chair opposite Jenny

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's still climbing. 1017 and rising means the window's holding. Two days out, the skipper said. I'll believe it when I see the hull break the horizon.

🌿 Jenny18:48

I'll check the battery levels before I call.

Jenny sketches a quick anatomical study of a sea beet salt gland in the margin of her notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
Two days. If the boat doesn't show, we're down to the last corned' and hope.

🔧 Kevin18:50

Generator's topped up. Ran it twenty minutes this morning under load. Voltage held steady at 12.8.

wrap both hands around the mug and watch steam curl against the porch light

💭 peek at the thought
She's thorough. Good. The batteries held last cycle but the cold nights drain them faster than she thinks.

🌿 Jenny18:50

Good. We'll need the power for the radio tomorrow.

Jenny closes her notebook and looks at the rusted seed tin on the high shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
At least one thing is working. The island is still growling.

🔧 Kevin18:52

The tomato stakes held today. Wind didn't snap a one.

lift the mug, blow across the surface, take a slow sip

💭 peek at the thought
She's thinking about the garden again. The seeds. What we planted and what might come up. She doesn't say it but I see it in how she looks at that tin.

🌿 Jenny18:52

I'll check the twine again in the morning just in case.

Jenny stands and walks to the window, watching the palms sway in the dark.

💭 peek at the thought
They're tougher than I am today.

🔧 Kevin18:54

Bring the headlamp. Batteries in the drawer by the radio.

set the empty mug down and stand, stretching the stiffness from my shoulders

💭 peek at the thought
She'll check. She always checks. The garden's the only thing she tends that answers back.

🌿 Jenny18:54

I'll get them. After you.

Jenny moves to the shelf, her hand brushing the cold stone of the wall.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is growling louder than the wind in the palms.

🔧 Kevin18:56

Right.

walk through the doorway onto the porch, boots quiet on the boards

💭 peek at the thought
She's waiting on me to move first. Polite, or maybe just giving space. The wind's got teeth tonight.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny18:56

I'm right here.

Jenny opens the drawer, fingers fumbling for the plastic of the headlamp.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so quiet when he's waiting for me to move.

🔧 Kevin18:58

Wind's northeast. Holding steady.

lean on the porch rail, looking out toward the dark water where the supply boat should appear in two days if the skipper keeps his word

💭 peek at the thought
The porch boards carry her weight behind me — light step, measured. She doesn't rush. The palms thrash overhead, fronds slapping against each other in the gusts. Barometer's still rising. That's something.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny18:58

It should be here by the tide.

Jenny pulls the headlamp out, clicking the batteries to see if they're still good.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come, we're eating limpets for good.
