The Gathering Clouds

Jenny sits on the kitchen floor holding the seabird chick while she attempts to feed it mashed fish. Kevin watches the barometer as the needle continues its slow descent toward 1010 hPa.

After the dawn feeding, the chick remains weak but stable in the warmth of the cottage. The sky thickens, turning the flat morning light into a heavy, oppressive grey as the tide continues to recede, exposing more of the northern rocky shelf.

🌿 Jenny01:52

Hold the light, Kevin. It's shaking.

Jenny presses a small amount of mashed fish into the chick's beak and watches.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping again. If this chick doesn't take the food now, it's gone before the boat.

(I set the headlamp on the table, beam angled down at her hands.) Steady now. Little at a time.

Watch the barometer, then reach for the kettle to put water on for tea.

💭 peek at the thought
The needle's dropped five millibars since I woke. Not a cliff, but steady. Chick's too weak to swallow proper — Jenny's patience outruns the odds.

🌿 Jenny01:54

It's so weak. Come on...

Jenny gently rubs the chick's throat to encourage the swallow.

💭 peek at the thought
He's barely swallowing. The air is too heavy for this.

🔧 Kevin01:54

Swallow, you bastard.

Pour hot water into two mugs, drop a tea bag in each, set one beside Jenny's knee on the floor.

💭 peek at the thought
Throat rub's the right call — stimulates the gape reflex. Barometer's at 1011 now. Falling consistent. Weather's coming.

🌿 Jenny01:56

I'm trying. Just... wait.

Jenny wipes a bit of fish from the chick's beak with her thumb, watching for a reflex.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so aggressive with the things that're already breaking.

🔧 Kevin01:56

Kevin — let the tea steep, hands wrapped around my mug, watching the chick's chest for the rise.

💭 peek at the thought
Chick's crop feels empty under my fingers when I checked earlier. Jenny's thumbs are gentler than mine ever were. Barometer 1010 flat. Wind'll shift northeast by noon if it holds this track.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:58

It's moving. I think it's actually moving.

Jenny offers another tiny bit of fish, waiting for the beak to open again.

💭 peek at the thought
If it dies, I don't think I can handle another failure on this island today.

🔧 Kevin01:58

Good. Again.

Sip tea, keep the headlamp steady, one eye on the chick's throat, one on the barometer needle.

💭 peek at the thought
Crop's taking. Barely. But it's taking. Barometer's stopped dropping — holding at 1010. That's something.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:00

It's taking it. Look.

Jenny carefully places another small amount of fish on the side of the beak, watching for the swallow.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is still falling. If the storm hits now, it won't make it.

🔧 Kevin02:00

Kevin — set mug down, reach for the notebook on the shelf, flip to the chick care page, mark the time and amount fed.

💭 peek at the thought
Third swallow in a row. Crop's rounding out. Chick's got fight left. Barometer steady at 1010 — front's stalled or slowing. Buy us hours maybe.
