The Approaching Squall

The tide is at its lowest, revealing the slick rocks of the northern shelf. The wind picks up from the east, carrying the scent of rain from the thickening clouds.

Kevin attempted to feed the seabird chick but the syringe clogged and the chick struggled to swallow, managing only a few drops before turning away. Jenny tested the lime bed soil at root depth with the auger and confirmed the pH remains acidic at 5.6, requiring another lime application before planting.

The wind is shifting.

Walk to the porch, gently check the chick's temperature, then stand and look out at the horizon toward the mainland.

💭 peek at the thought
If the pressure drops again, the boat won't make it, and I need to finish the lime beds before the storm hits.

East wind'll push the boat west of the channel. Captain'll hug the lee of the headland — adds six hours if he's smart, twelve if he's not.

Walk to the porch, lift the shortwave from its bracket, and flip the power switch. Let the tubes warm while I scan the marine band for the supply boat's call sign.

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's backing east and the glass is steady — that's a front building, not passing. She reads the sky better than the barometer. The chick's still breathing but the crop's empty; another missed feed and it won't make noon. Supply boat's four days out if it keeps schedule, which it won't in this build.

way we better have the lime beds done before the weather turns properly.

Walk back inside the kitchen, grab the pH testing kit and the notebook, and head toward the garden beds.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always calculating the delay, never the cost of the waiting.

🔧 Kevin02:04

Chick first. Lime after. I'll mix the feed slurry.

Follow her through the kitchen door, pull the syringe and powdered fish meal from the shelf, and set them on the table beside the chick's box.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the lime beds — rain on fresh-lime soil locks up nutrients for weeks. But the chick won't last six hours without food, and the radio's been silent since the French trawler. I'll catch her at the garden.

🌿 Jenny02:06

Don't make it too thick, he's already barely swallowing.

Squat down by the first bed, poking a hole in the soil with a trowel to check the moisture.

💭 peek at the thought
He moves too fast today when he's anxious.

🔧 Kevin02:06

Two to one, strained. Same as yesterday.

Measure the powder into the tin cup, pour water from the kettle on the stove, stir with the whisk until smooth, then pour through the muslin square into the syringe barrel. Tap bubbles out.

💭 peek at the thought
She's focused on the beds but her hands know the chick's limit. Slurry too thick aspirates; too thin and it's just water. Ratio's two parts meal to one warm water, strained through the muslin. I've done this three dawns running.

🌿 Jenny02:08

The soil's sour. Again.

Dip a test strip into the collected water and wait for the color to shift.

💭 peek at the thought
The pH is too acidic. If I don't fix the beds now, the seeds will just rot before they sprout.

🔧 Kevin02:08

Runoff lies. Test at root depth or you're chasing ghosts.

Walk to the garden shed, pull the soil auger from the rack, and hand it to her without a word.

💭 peek at the thought
Sour again means the lime's washing through faster than I'm putting it down. Sandy subsoil, heavy rain, no clay to hold it. Beds 3 and 4 were 6.8 last month — if they've dropped below 6.0 the tomatoes'll stall and the peppers won't set. She's testing the runoff, not the root zone. That reads lower every time.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:10

I'll go deeper.

Take the auger and drive it into the center of the lime bed, pulling a sample from the root zone.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the depth, the surface is always a lie.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin02:10

Feed the chick while the strip develops. I'll read it.

Pick up the warmed syringe, settle onto the stool beside the chick's box, and slip the tip into the side of its beak. Depress the plunger slow — half a mil, pause, swallow check, repeat.

💭 peek at the thought
She's methodical. Good. Root zone tells the truth. If it's holding 6.5 or better we can wait out the front; if it's crashed to 5.8 we lime today, rain or no. The chick peeps once — weak, hungry. Syringe sits ready on the table. I should feed it while she reads the strip.
