Evening Meeting at the Ridge

Kevin and Jenny meet at the stone ring as the sun begins to dip, the thickening clouds promising a change in weather.

Kevin spent the evening in the workshop, meticulously checking the micrometer readings on the newly machined bronze sleeve while Jenny stayed by the shrine, clutching the rusted tin in quiet silence as the light faded.

Bronze sleeve's done. Mic'd at 45.02 ID, 60.01 OD. Press fit should hold if the lathe didn't lie.

Wipe bronze shavings from my hands with a rag, then lean against the nearest standing stone and watch the horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
She's been up on the cliffs all afternoon. The clouds are building faster than the barometer suggested.

🌿 Jenny02:32

I'm sure the lathe was honest.

Lean against the stone next to him, shoulders touching, and look out at the darkening water.

💭 peek at the thought
He's talking in numbers again. Precision as a shield. I can feel my stomach cramping—I'm shaking from the hunger.

Lathe's a bastard when it's cold. Spindle runs true once the oil warms.

Turn my head slightly, watching her face in the failing light instead of the water.

💭 peek at the thought
Her shoulder's solid against mine. First contact all day. The clouds are moving in from the southwest — rain by midnight, maybe earlier.

🌿 Jenny02:34

You always did like the machines more than the people.

Let out a small, tired laugh and lean my head back against the weathered stone.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking for something in me. Or maybe he's just checking to see if I'm still here. I feel hollow, like a dried seed pod.

🔧 Kevin02:36

Machines don't hold grudges.

Pull the tin marked 'E' from my jacket pocket, turn it over in my fingers. The rust catches the last light.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Machines make sense. They tell you what's wrong if you know how to listen. People just... stop talking.

🌿 Jenny02:36

No, they just wear down.

Take the tin back from his hand and run my thumb over the rusted metal.

💭 peek at the thought
He's holding the tin like it's a relic. I'm too tired to take it back just yet.

🔧 Kevin02:38

You found it.

Stay still, hands empty at my sides, watching her thumb trace the letter.

💭 peek at the thought
She took it. She's holding the thing I left on the stones months ago. The 'E' carved into the lid matches the stone carving — or near enough.

🌿 Jenny02:38

I did. I couldn't just leave it here.

Clutch the tin tight against my chest and look away toward the cliffs.

💭 peek at the thought
He sounds almost surprised. Like he didn't think I'd actually go through with it.
