The Heat and the Hammer
Kevin stands by the Yanmar engine as the heat begins to shimmer off the wood planks. Jenny sits on the edge of the dock, checking the alignment of cedar wedges for the mooring ring.
The heat is a physical weight, pressing the shimmering air down against the dock. The tide is high, the salt water lapping rhythmically against the newly reinforced ring. Kevin and Jenny work in the sweltering silence, the smell of salt and hot wood heavy between them.
Engine’s holding true. If the ring stays, we’ll have a clean tie when the boat comes.
wipe sweat from brow with forearm, then check the Yanmar’s fuel line for leaks while Jenny works on the wedges.

The wedges are tight for now, but the wood is soft. I need to reinforce it.
Tap the cedar wedge deeper into the mortise with a mallet, checking for a flush fit.

Grab a sound plank from the salvage pile. I'll drill through-bolts from the back while you hold the wedge line.
walk to the cottage workshop, return with a 2x6 offcut, 10mm drill bit, two galvanized through-bolts with washers and nyloc nuts, set them on the dock beside Jenny.

Just don't split the timber. It's already half-gone.
Hold the cedar wedge firmly in place with one hand, keeping the mooring ring centered for the drill.

Won't split it. Pilot hole first, then the bolt. You hold, I drill.
drill a 10mm pilot hole through the sound offcut and into the mortise wall behind the ring, slow and steady, clearing chips every few turns, then drive the first through-bolt with washer and nyloc, torque it snug but not crushing.

See? Not a split.
Release the pressure on the wedge and wipe the sawdust off the mooring ring with her palm.
