The Heat Deepens

The sun climbs higher, intensifying the shimmer over the sand as the tide begins its slow turn back.

Kevin took the dinghy out for a sea trial but the Yanmar engine failed under load, forcing him to row back against the current. Jenny secured the dock mooring ring with cedar wedges and documented the repair, then began preparing sea-beet seeds for planting.

Taking her out. Back before the turn fills the channel.

untie the dinghy from the dock, step in, start the Yanmar, and motor out into the channel for a proper sea trial

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's turning. Window's opening. Need to get the dinghy off the dock and test it proper before the boat shows up — engine, steering, the lot. And the rat trap needs checking. Pantry's been quiet but that means nothing.

Don't be too long. The pressure is holding.

wipe sweat from my brow with a dusty forearm and pick up my notebook to detail the mooring ring assembly.

💭 peek at the thought
If that engine dies out there, I'm not swimming it back in this heat.

🔧 Kevin05:32

Won't be.

throttle up and head for the channel mouth where the current starts to show, putting the engine under real load

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the barometer closer than I am. Pressure holding means the front's still west — buys us time. But the dinghy needs to prove itself in chop, not this millpond.

🌿 Jenny05:34

Keep an eye on the temp.

watch the wake dissipate into the blue and begin sketching the salt glands on the sea beet leaves I found near the jetty.

💭 peek at the thought
He always pushes the machinery until it screams, just like he pushes for an answer.
