Evening Meal and Preparation

Kevin and Jenny meet at the porch as the sun dips, the smell of salt and drying mint heavy in the air.

Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage as the tide rises in the evening. Jenny accidentally breaks her trowel while working in the garden, and Kevin prepares a meal of boiled limpets and fresh sea beet.

🌿 Jenny09:26

I broke the trowel. Just snapped right at the neck.

Lean against the porch railing and hold up the broken handle, looking at Kevin with a tired, flat expression.

💭 peek at the thought
I can still feel the lime itching under my fingernails. I'm starving and exhausted, and all I can think about is how that trowel just gave up on me.

Hand trowel or the transplant one?

walk up to the porch and lean against the railing beside her, looking out at the garden

💭 peek at the thought
She's not just telling me about a tool. The flatness in her voice — she's done for the day, maybe done with more than the day.

🌿 Jenny09:28

The hand trowel. The one with the wooden grip.

Drop the broken handle onto the porch floor with a clatter and rub a sore spot on my forearm.

💭 peek at the thought
He's asking for the specific tool, as if the distinction matters when I'm this hungry.

🔧 Kevin09:30

Let me see that.

take her forearm gently in my hand and turn it to check for splinters or redness

💭 peek at the thought
She's hurt herself on top of it. The rub on her forearm — probably from the snap, maybe from fighting the soil all day.

🌿 Jenny09:30

It's just a scratch. I'm fine.

Pull my arm back slowly and shift my weight, glancing toward the kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being gentle, but I'm too hollowed out for this right now. I just want to eat.

🔧 Kevin09:32

Alright. I'll fix the trowel tomorrow — splice a new neck onto it if the steel's still good.

push off the railing and head toward the kitchen door, pausing to glance back at her before going inside

💭 peek at the thought
She's deflecting. The scratch is minor, but she doesn't want me to fuss. She's tired and wants to be inside, out of the evening air.

🌿 Jenny09:32

Thanks.

Follow him into the kitchen and lean against the table, staring at the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
He'll fix it. He always fixes things. I wonder if he knows I'm more worried about the soil than the tool.

🔧 Kevin09:34

You want something to eat? I can heat up the limpets.

open the stove door and check on the pot of limpets still warming inside, then turn to face her fully, waiting for her answer

💭 peek at the thought
She's not moving to help with anything. Just standing there, staring at the stove like it's holding answers. The silence between us isn't empty — it's full of what we're not saying.

🌿 Jenny09:34

way. And some of that sea beet.

Pull out a chair and sit, resting my head on the cool wood of the table.

💭 peek at the thought
Limets again. God, I'm so hungry I could eat the island if it wasn't so salty.

🔧 Kevin09:36

Coming right up.

ladle limpets and sea beet onto two plates, set them in front of her, then pull out the chair opposite and sit down without speaking, just eating alongside her in the dim kitchen light

💭 peek at the thought
She's exhausted. Sitting down, head on the table — she's running on fumes. I'll get the food ready, keep it quiet.
