Evening Meal and Rest

You and Jenny sit at the wooden table, the steam from the limpets filling the small room as the heat of the day fades. The tide laps softly against the cottage walls.

The rain continues its steady drumming on the cottage roof as the water tank finally reaches its brim, overflowing slightly. Inside, the air is heavy with the scent of damp earth and the salty tang of the boiled-limets.

🌿 Jenny09:36

The pH is down for now. I'll have to fix the tool tomorrow.

Jenny picks up a piece of sea beet with her fork and eats it slowly.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm so tired my hands ache, and the smell of that salt is making my stomach growl.

Trowel's a clean break. Can braze the neck tomorrow if the metal's thick enough. If not, there's a spare blade in the crate by the generator — just needs a handle shaped.

Fork a limpet from the pot, pull the meat free with the small pick, and eat it slow while the rain steadies on the roof.

💭 peek at the thought
She's quiet tonight. The broken trowel, the damping-off, the lime — she's carrying it all without saying much. I should've checked the garden beds myself before she went out in this heat.

🌿 Jenny09:38

I'd prefer a new handle. The balance on that one was off anyway.

Jenny leans back in her chair and looks at the rain streaking the window.

💭 peek at the thought
He's already calculating the fix. He does that—treats everything like a machine to be tuned.

I'll shape a new one tomorrow. Ash from the shed, same length, tapered a bit more at the grip. Should sit better.

Push the bowl toward her, still warm, and wipe my hands on my trousers before reaching for the notebook to check the pH log from today's test.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — it never sat right in her hand. Ash wood from the old shed, straight grain, about twenty inches. I can turn it on the lathe attachment for the drill if I clamp it proper.

🌿 Jenny09:40

Don't smudge the ink. It's still a bit damp.

Jenny gently pulls the notebook a few inches closer to herself, protecting the pages.

💭 peek at the thought
He's touching the notebook. He doesn't understand that the log is just a starting point, not the answer.

🔧 Kevin09:42

Right. Won't touch it.

Lean back in my chair, fold my arms, and watch the rain streak the window while the limpets cool in their shells.

💭 peek at the thought
Fair enough. The ink's water-soluble until it fully dries. I'll read it later when it's set.

🌿 Jenny09:42

It's a good sound. The rain.

Jenny takes a slow sip of water from her glass and looks at Kevin.

💭 peek at the thought
The silence is getting heavy. He's waiting for me to say something about the future, but all I can think about is the fungus in the trays.

🔧 Kevin09:44

Mm. Tank's full. Four hundred litres.

Nod once at the window, then reach for my own glass and drink.

💭 peek at the thought
She's noticing things again. The rain, the sound of it. Not the work, not what's broken. Just the rain.
