The Storm Breaks

The wind howls through the eaves as the sky finally opens into a downpour. Kevin and Jenny retreat inside the cottage as the rain rattles the frames.

The air inside the cottage is thick with humidity and the smell of boiling seaweeds. Outside, the wind has shifted, now carrying a heavy spray of salt that whistles through the gaps in the door frame. The tide is at its peak, pressing against the rain tank with a low, rhythmic vibration that rattles the floorboards.

🌿 Jenny14:41

Check the combination on the kitchen door again, Kevin. The wind is catching the frame.

Walk to the wood stove to start a small fire and pull the tin of seeds from the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast; if the tide rises any higher, the salt beet seedlings will be drowned.

On it.

walk to the kitchen door and test the latch, then inspect the porch brace and hinge alignment

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's shifted hard. Door frame's been catching since the last front — hinges need shimming but the cedar wedges swelled useless. I'll check the latch and the porch brace while she's at the stove.

🌿 Jenny14:42

Put the towel against the base if you still hear the air whistling through the stone.

way by the stove and open the tin of seeds, tracing the dry husk of a poppy with my thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
If that door fails, the salt spray will ruin the sketches before I even finish the page.

🔧 Kevin14:42

Already got one in mind.

grab a dry towel from the hook by the door and stuff it tight against the base of the kitchen door where the whistle's coming through, then press it in with my boot to hold it snug

💭 peek at the thought
The stone's porous where the mortar's gone — wind's finding its way through old cracks. A towel'll buy us tonight, but we'll need to repoint it come dry spell.

🌿 Jenny14:44

Keep an eye on the tank. If it starts rattling, the tide is too high.

sit on the floor by the stove and spread the seeds out on a clean cloth, sorting them by size.

💭 peek at the thought
That's better, but the wind is still finding a way through the mortar.

🔧 Kevin14:44

Watching it.

step out onto the porch, face the tank, and listen for any rattling or vibration from the rain tank while the wind and tide press against it

💭 peek at the thought
Tank's full, but with the tide this high and wind pushing surf up the rocks, spray could be hammering the vent or the overflow. I'll listen from the porch — if it starts jumping, we've got a problem.

🌿 Jenny14:46

Don't stay out too long. The wind is picking up the salt.

pick up a single sea beet seed and hold it to the firelight, noting the rough edges.

💭 peek at the thought
He's out there in the grey. The rain is going to get to the bone.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin14:46

Almost done.

stand still for ten seconds, focused on the tank's sound, then turn and walk back inside, shaking rain from my sleeves as I close the porch door behind me

💭 peek at the thought
Salt's already on my lips. One more check — if the tank's quiet, I'll come in and get out of this blow before it drives damp deeper into my bones.
