The Storm Approaches

The barometer continues to drop as the sky darkens further. The tide begins to turn, and the first heavy drops of the wet season start to hit the roof.

The tide retreats far from the shore, exposing slick rocks and the entrance to the tide pools. The air is heavy with humidity, and the thickening cloud cover dampens the light, pressing the weight of the coming rain.

🔧 Kevin14:48

Kevin — walk to the dock and check all mooring lines and the seaward bolts on the mooring ring reinforcement

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's still falling and the sky's turning the colour of a bruise. First heavy drops hitting the roof — wet season's proper started. Need to check the dinghy lines again before the tide turns fully and the swell builds against the dock. The mooring ring held with the doubler plate, but the seaward bolts took a beating last storm.

Kevin, get back inside! The tide is coming in faster than the forecast!

Stand up, grab the seed tin, and move to the porch to watch the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if those bolts don't hold, the dinghy is lost to the surge.

Coming — just securing the bow line first.

sprint to the dinghy and cast off the bow line, then shove off hard to clear the dock before the rising tide pins us against the pilings

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — water's already licking the lower pilings and it's only going up. Forecast didn't account for the surge hitting the south-facing dock this hard. I should've moved the dinghy higher when the barometer started dropping steady.

The tide is too high for that! Watch the way ring!

way the edge of the porch railing white-knuckle and watch the dinghy dip into the first swell.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being reckless; if the current catches the hull before he's clear, the bolts will rip right out.

🔧 Kevin14:52

Ring's shifting — coming back now! Cut the engine and drift in!

kill the Yanmar throttle, let the dinghy drift broadside to the swell, and grab the dock piling with both hands to pull myself aboard before the next wave hits

💭 peek at the thought
She saw the ring shift — just like the journal said. The doubler plate's holding but the mortise is rotted clear through; under surge load, the ring's tilting and taking the bolts with it. If the dinghy hangs on it now, we'll rip the whole thing out and lose the boat in the dark.

🌿 Jenny14:52

Watch the swell! Get the line!

Lean out over the porch, reaching down to help guide the dinghy as it rolls.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to smash the hull against the stone if he doesn't time that surge.
