opening the crate in the storm

The wind lashes against the roof as you move the crate inside to the dry. The crowbar is ready to break the salt-weakened wood.

Kevin and Jenny meet at the old shrine to open the waterlogged crate recovered from the surf. Kevin uses the crowbar to pry the salt-crusted lid apart while Jenny inspect the contents as the rain begins to intensify.

🌿 Jenny16:33

Don't touch the lid yet, I need to pry it carefully.

💭 peek at the thought
If the seeds are rotten from the salt, I don't have the heart to try again.

🔧 Kevin16:34

Alright. I’ll hold it steady. Take your time.

brace the crate with my knee and shoulder, crowbar resting across my palms, ready but not applied.

💭 peek at the thought
The crate’s been in the surf long enough to rot the lid. Jenny’s right—forcing it could spill whatever’s inside into the dirt. Better to wait, let her work it slow. I’ll hold the crowbar ready but not use it unless she asks.

🌿 Jenny16:35

just hold it flat. If the wood splits, the whole batch goes.

slide the crowbar under the edge of the lid

💭 peek at the thought
my hands are shaking, maybe it's just the cold or the hunger.

🔧 Kevin16:36

Got it. Flat and slow.

shift my weight to keep the crate level, eyes on the lid seam as she works the crowbar in.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s being careful—good. One slip and we lose seed, maybe food. I’ll keep my weight even, let the crate settle. No rushing.

🌿 Jenny16:36

careful, it's waterlogged through and through.

pry the crowbar upward to lift the lid

💭 peek at the thought
the wood is so soft, it might just crumble away under the pressure.

🔧 Kevin16:38

Holding.

lean my weight on the crate's far edge, boots planted on the slick boards, keeping it level as the lid lifts.

💭 peek at the thought
The wood groans, sodden and soft. If the lid tears, the contents spill into the wet dock planks. I press down on the far corner, holding it flat against the grain, letting her leverage do the work.

🌿 Jenny16:38

almost there, let's see.

reach into the tin to touch the seeds

💭 peek at the thought
the smell of salt and old earth is hitting me. I hope they're still viable.

🔧 Kevin16:40

Kevin — keep the crate steady, watching her face more than the tin.

💭 peek at the thought
The lid gives with a wet suck. Salt crust flakes off the rim. Inside, the tin marked 'E' sits whole—rusted but sealed. Jenny's fingers brush the lid. I hold my breath.
