Shelter from the downpour

Kevin and Jenny retreat to the porch as the rain turns into a torrential storm. The wind howls through the radio mast.

Kevin inspected the Yanmar cutless bearing at first light, noting the wear on the shaft. Jenny checked the water tank for leaks and began weeding the north patch of the garden under the heavy humidity.

🔧 Kevin16:40

Gonna check the dinghy lines and generator straps. Put the kettle on?

walk to the dock

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's closing in fast. Barometer's still dropping. Need to check the generator lashings and the dinghy lines before the dock takes a beating. Jenny's quiet — cold, maybe, or just worn down. I'll get the stove going, then secure the boat. She doesn't need me talking. She needs the place to hold.

Take the flashlight. The wind is coming sideways.

Walk into the kitchen, light the wood stove, and fill the kettle with water.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to get soaked in five seconds. The barometer is dropping too fast for that.

🔧 Kevin16:42

Got it.

grab the flashlight from the shelf by the radio and head out to the dock

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Sideways rain means no seeing the cleats. Flashlight's on the shelf by the radio. Grab it, check the dinghy's forward spring and the new stern line I spliced. Then the generator ratchet straps. She's got the stove going — good. Warm water for whatever comes next.

🌿 Jenny16:44

Stay by the roof if the spray starts coming over the wall!

Set the kettle on the stove and watch the rain hit the window.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so stubborn. The tide is already too high for those moorings.

🔧 Kevin16:44

Will do.

check the dinghy's forward spring line at the dock bollard, then the stern line where it splices to the mooring ring

💭 peek at the thought
Spray over the wall means the tide's up and the wind's pushing. The cottage's stone, but the porch roof is low — smart to stay under it if it starts breaking. I'll work fast: check the dinghy's mooring, then the generator straps, then get back under cover. No use fighting the storm — just ride it out dry and ready.

🌿 Jenny16:46

Check the knots again! The salt makes them so slick.

Pick up the pencil and start to sketch the way the rain is lashing the glass.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is going to rip those cleats right off the wood if the surge hits.

🔧 Kevin16:47

On it.

recheck the bow line knot on the dock cleat and the stern line splice where it meets the mooring ring, then pull tight on both to test for slip

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — salt and tension turn even good knots to grease. I'll recheck both ends: the bow line round the cleat, the stern splice where it meets the mooring ring. If they hold, I'll hit the generator straps next. Then back to the porch. She's sketching the storm — quiet focus. Good. Means she's not panicking.

🌿 Jenny16:48

Don't stay out too long! The tide is turning fast.

Listen to the wind against the stone and look at the seed tin on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
If that boat goes under, we're stuck here until the next supply.
