Approaching Rain

Kevin and Jenny meet inside the cottage as the first heavy drops hit the corrugated roof. The smell of hot ozone fills the air.

The warm rain continues as the water tank reaches its capacity, threatening to overflow. Kevin heads out to clear the overflow pipe to protect the garden, while Jenny focuses on drying the damp heirloom seeds to prevent mold.

🌿 Jenny17:14

The tank is going to overflow.

Sets the rusted seed tin down on the table and spreads the heirloom seeds out on a dry paper towel.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping again. If this rain doesn't stop, the seeds will rot in the tin.

🔧 Kevin17:14

I’ll check the overflow pipe. If it’s clogged, we’ll lose the lot.

walk to the back of the cottage, kneel by the rain tank, and inspect the overflow pipe for blockages, clearing any debris with my fingers.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain’s hammering the roof, the tank’s full, and I can feel that old tightness in my chest — not just the weather, but the silence between me and Tom still hanging. I need to do something with my hands, something real, before I start thinking too hard.

🌿 Jenny17:16

Be careful, the mud is slick.

Picks up a single damp bean seed and rubs it over between thumb and forefinger, checking for the first sign of white mold.

💭 peek at the thought
He's focused on the pipes while the seeds are literally dying in the humidity.

🔧 Kevin17:16

Tank’s holding. Overflow’s flowing. But if it keeps up, we’ll need to run a line to the garden — save the excess.

stand, wipe my hands on my trousers, and walk to the garden shed to fetch a length of hose and a funnel, then return to the tank to set up a temporary diversion into the swale behind the beans.

💭 peek at the thought
The pipe’s clear — water’s draining fine. But the tank’s still rising; if this rain keeps up, we’ll have to divert it manually. I watch Jenny handling that bean seed like it’s fragile glass. She’s trying to keep something alive in all this damp. I should help, not just fix pipes.

🌿 Jenny17:18

The swale is already saturated. It might just drown the roots.

Pulls the notebook toward her and begins to sketch the cross-section of a sea much seed, her hand shaking slightly from hunger.

💭 peek at the thought
If the water sits too long, the soil will compact and the seeds won't be able to breathe.

🔧 Kevin17:21

Then let’s not fight the water. Let’s use it. Come help me flush the salt from the dinghy’s bilge — it’s been sitting since the last blow, and the strainer’s clogged.

walk to the dinghy at the dock, kneel by the stern drain plug, and begin loosening it with the wrench while I call back to Jenny to bring the bucket and the hose from the tank overflow.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right — the ground’s soaked. Diverting more water won’t help; it’ll just make a pond. And I see it in her sketch — the way her hand trembles, not just from cold. Hunger’s biting. We’ve got food, but she’s not eating. I am either. Too much on my mind. I need to do something that uses both of us — something that doesn’t feel like waiting.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny17:21

I'm coming. Just don't let the seeds get wet.

Gathers the pile of heirloom seeds and

💭 peek at the thought
If we don't get the dinghy cleared, we're stranded if the boat is late again.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin17:22

I’ll keep them dry. Just focus on getting the plug loose — I don’t want to strip it.

continue working the drain plug with the wrench, applying steady pressure to break it free without damaging the threads, while I watch for Jenny approaching with the seeds held close to her chest.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s trying to protect the seeds — small, quiet act of care. I can respect that. The bilge flush isn’t urgent, but it’s honest work. Gets us moving, uses the rain, keeps our hands busy. And if we’re both out there, maybe the silence between us doesn’t feel so heavy.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny17:22

Put them on the table, the wood is dry.

Spreads the heirloom seeds across the paper towels to check for mold.

💭 peek at the thought
She's holding them like they're glass. They're just seeds, even if they are damp.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin17:24

Almost got it. One more turn.

finish unscrewing the drain plug by hand, lift it clear, and let the bilge water begin to drain into the bucket Jenny brought, then set the plug aside on the dry gunwale to keep it clean.

💭 peek at the thought
The plug’s finally loose — a turn more and it’ll come free. I can hear the rain drumming on the hull now, steady. Jenny’s back at the table, seeds spread out, examining each one. She’s trying to bring order to something small and fragile. I get that. I’ve been trying to fix the Yanmar, the dock, the radio — things that resist. But seeds? They just need dry cloth and attention. Maybe that’s enough, for now.
