The Storm Breaks

The warm rain turns into a violent downpour as the wind picks up. You both meet inside the cottage as the roof rattles under the sudden pressure of the storm.

The rain has turned into a heavy downpour, drumming rhythmically against the cottage roof. Kevin is out in the mud, boots sinking deep, as he works on the water tank's overflow pipe. Inside, the wood stove crackles as Jenny builds a fire, spreading the damp heirloom seeds across paper towels to save them from the humidity.

🔧 Kevin17:24

Overflow's backing up. I'll clear the pipe—keep the stove fed, would you?

Grab the crowbar from the porch and head out into the rain, boots sinking into the softened earth as I make for the tank's overflow pipe.

💭 peek at the thought
The tank's about to go—gotta clear that overflow before the garden washes out. Jenny's here, quiet as ever, but I can see she's tense. Storm's moving fast; barometer's dropping like a stone.

🌿 Jenny17:26

Watch the step by the tank. I'll get the fire going.

walk to the wood stove, gather dry kindling, and start a fire to dry the air.

💭 peek at the thought
If he's going out there in that, he's going to slip. The rocks are like glass now.

🔧 Kevin17:26

Step's noted. Thanks for the fire—smell of wood smoke'll be a welcome change from wet wool.

Jam the crowbar into the silt-choked overflow opening, using my weight and leverage to jerk it loose in short, hard bursts, spraying mud and rainwater as I work to clear the blockage.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the step—slick as grease. But the fire'll help; damp's getting in the bones. Focus on the pipe—silt's packed hard, but if I can break it loose, the tank won't drown the garden.

🌿 Jenny17:28

Just don't overdo it! The ground is soup.

spread the damp heirloom seeds out on the paper towels near the stove, trying to catch some heat from the flames.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to hurt himself if that bar slips. The water is moving too fast out.

🔧 Kevin17:29

Won't overdo it. Just need this plug to break.

Drive the crowbar deeper into the overflow, twisting and prying with controlled force, feeling for the moment the compacted silt gives way and water surges through.

💭 peek at the thought
Ground's turning to slurry fast. Crowbar's biting—feel the silt shifting. If this plug breaks, the tank'll breathe. If not, the garden's gone by morning. Jenny's got the seeds by the stove; smart. Heat'll pull the moisture off them before rot sets in.

🌿 Jenny17:30

I'm getting the heat up.

add another log to the stove and check the seeds for any sign of grey.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is peaking. If that pipe doesn't clear, the whole garden goes under.

🔧 Kevin17:30

Almost there—feel it loosening.

Put full weight behind the crowbar, using a sharp, upward heave to break the silt plug loose, then step back as a rush of dark water and mud erupts from the overflow, clearing the pipe and dropping the tank level fast.

💭 peek at the thought
Water's starting to seep around the edges of the crowbar—pressure's building. One good heave and this plug should blow. Seeds are safe for now; stove's drawing well. Keep the flow steady, don't let it erode the bank.

🌿 Jenny17:32

Get inside before you catch pneumonia. The fire's ready.

stand by the stove, wiping soot from my hands, and watch the door to the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
way. The pressure is dropping, but he's soaked to the bone.
