Evening at the standing stones

Rain eases to a low mist as they walk the ridge path together. The stone ring appears through the grey — weathered uprights carved with names they don't know, the heavy rusted tin marked 'E' still sitting where it was left. Wind moves through the grass. They stand shoulder to shoulder without speaking.

Kevin tested the Yanmar engine under load in the dinghy while Jenny mapped the north ridge tide pools and collected sea beet samples. Kevin's engine test revealed a vibration issue, and Jenny successfully recorded pH data and sketched pool morphology. A coconut crab disturbed the garden overnight, damaging some seedlings.

🌿 Jenny19:23

The tide is out enough for the north pools.

reaches out and traces the edge of a carved name on the stone with a damp thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is so empty it's aching, but the air is so clear after the rain.

🔧 Kevin19:23

North pools'll be calm. Good light for the transect too.

stand beside her at the stone ring, watching the mist lift off the ridge

💭 peek at the thought
The mist clings cold. She's reading the stone like I'd read a gauge — looking for what's underneath. The tin's still there. E. Been there since we found it. Never opened it.

🌿 Jenny19:24

I need to check the pH before the boat comes.

pulls the notebook from her pocket and begins to sketch the outline of the tide line.

💭 peek at the thought
If I map the pools today, maybe I can find the strength to plant tomorrow.

🔧 Kevin19:25

Strips are in the kit on the porch. Five left.

glance at the tin marked E, then back to the carved names on the uprights

💭 peek at the thought
She's mapping what the tide leaves behind. Smart. The boat's two days out — barometer's rising, she'll want baseline data before the supply run stirs things up.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:26

I'll be careful with the measurements.

tightens her grip on the pencil and marks the first sea beet cluster on the map.

💭 peek at the thought
Five strips is enough for the garden patch if I don't waste them.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin19:26

Good. We'll compare it to the lime beds later.

turn slowly, hands loose at my sides, and walk ten paces down the ridge toward the north pools, keeping her in sight

💭 peek at the thought
She's not just measuring pH — she's mapping where life holds on. Sea beet first. That's the northern cluster we noted last month. She remembers.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny19:28

I'll bring the samples back in.

kneels on the damp earth and starts drawing the jagged edge of the first pool.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always thinking about the data, but the light is perfect now.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin19:29

I'll check the dinghy mooring while you're down there. Stern line held last blow but chafe shows.

keep walking the ridge line toward the north cliffs, boots finding the worn path through the grass

💭 peek at the thought
Kneeling in wet grass with a pencil. She's thorough. The pools'll give her salt gradients, pH shifts, the beet distribution — all of it. Two days before the boat. She's building something she can hand over.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:30

Watch out for the slippery rocks down there.

opens the notebook to a fresh page and begins the first sketch of the tide pool morphology.

💭 peek at the thought
I need to focus on the salt beet before the hunger gets too sharp.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin19:32

Rocks are slick with weed. I'll keep to the gullies.

pause at the edge of the ridge, look down at the pools catching the low light, then step off onto the first slab of stone, testing it with my boot before committing weight

💭 peek at the thought
She's already seeing cross-sections — zonation, splash zone, algal bands. Morphology sketch. That's more than pH. She's thinking ahead, building a record. Like the sea beet transect. Like she used to do back home before the trust.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny19:32

Don't stay too long, the barometer is still dropping.

crouches by the first pool, pencil moving quickly to capture the intricate structure of the sea much cluster.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide is out far enough to see the salt area on the leaves.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin19:34

Barometer's up. Nine eighty-two and climbing. I'll be quick.

move carefully across the wet rock, avoiding the black tar lichen patches, and kneel at the pool edge to scoop a sample into the vial from her kit

💭 peek at the thought
She's wrong — barometer's rising. I checked it this morning. But she's worried. Old habit. Storms at sea. Forty minutes in the Biscay. She thinks I forget. I don't.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny19:34

Check the pH of the water when you get back.

marks the exact location of the pool on the map, her hand steady despite the hunger.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right, the numbers always move faster than the plants.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin19:36

Will do.

cap the vial, tuck it into my jacket, and start the careful climb back up the ridge toward the shrine, placing each boot on the dry cracks between stones

💭 peek at the thought
Hunger makes her hands shake a little. She won't admit it. I saw her skip lunch — gave her portion to the seabird chick yesterday. The pH vial's in my pocket. I'll run it when I get back. Compare to her garden log. See if the sea spray's pushing the beds alkaline.
