Evening at the Shrine

Kevin and Jenny sit together on the stone steps of the old shrine, sharing a meal of boiled limpets and sea beet. The rain has eased to a light drizzle, and the wooden crate from the surf sits open between them, its contents sorted: new rope, tinned provisions, and a box of fishing line and hooks. They discuss the engine vibration and the garden damage from the crab.

Kevin ate limpets and sea beet, then rested at the shrine. Jenny noted crab damage to seedlings and acidic soil, ate sea beet, and expressed need for lime. They shared a quiet meal while the tide rose and the barometer held steady.

The crab got into the sea beet seedlings. I'll have to move the mesh closer to the wall.

wipe sticky hands on my trousers and trace the edge of a worn carving on the stone with my thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing and the salt in this air feels too heavy. He's looking at the engine specs again instead of the horizon.

I’ll take a look at the Yanmar mounts tomorrow at dawn. And I’ll help you reset the mesh after we eat—get it stapled tight to the wall where the crab got in.

break off a limpets shell and eat the meat, then reach for the sea beet to mix with it.

💭 peek at the thought
The vibration in the Yanmar is just a sleeve seating issue—prop shaft’s true, nut’s torqued. I’ll recheck the mount bolts at first light. Jenny’s right about the crab; those seedlings won’t stand a chance without the mesh tight to the wall. I should’ve checked the garden sooner.

🌿 Jenny19:40

The soil is too acidic in that corner. I need more lime from the boat.

take a small bite of the salted sea beet and look out over the dark, overcast ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
If he helps with the mesh, maybe I'll actually plant the seeds tomorrow. I'm so tired of looking at weeds.

We've got what's left in the sack—maybe two kilos crushed. I'll check the crate inventory again, but I don't think there's lime in it. If the boat comes, I'll radio for a bag.

pull the last limpets from the pot, crack one open, and set the meat on the sea beet leaves.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right—the soil pH log showed 5.5 untreated, and the lime we have is crushed but not enough for a full bed correction. The supply boat's due in two days if it shows. I should check the crate again for any bagged lime or amendments, though I don't recall seeing any.
