← Day 262

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the tide pools

Midday work at dock and tide pools

Kevin is at the dock testing the Yanmar under load; Jenny is at the north ridge tide pools finishing her mapping as the tide turns.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You sit in the dinghy at the dock, engine idling, ready to push off and run the Yanmar under way. The vibration at half throttle nags at you — prop shaft alignment or the slightly skewed mast bracket. You'll take her out, open the throttle, and feel if the sleeve and truing held. The supply boat arrives in two days; the mooring ring still shifts.

🔧 Kevin19:02

Kevin — cast off the bow line, push the dinghy clear of the dock, and engage forward gear. Run her up to half throttle and hold course toward the south beach, feeling for vibration through the tiller and deck.

💭 peek at the thought
Engine's warm enough. Time to see if the sleeve holds under way. If the vibration's still there at half throttle, it's the bracket alignment. If it's clean, we're good for the supply boat.

🔧 Kevin19:06

Kevin — bring the dinghy back alongside the dock, kill the engine, and step out. Grab the heavy wrench and check the mooring ring mortise again — see if the oak wedges and doubler plate are actually holding or if it needs more.

💭 peek at the thought
Vibration's gone. The sleeve and truing held. Engine pulls clean all the way to full throttle. Tell-tale's strong, no smoke after the initial burn-off. Only thing left is the mooring ring on the dock — shifts under load still. Supply boat in two days. Needs sorting before they tie up.

🔧 Kevin19:10

Kevin — walk up to the cottage, get the three salvaged plank cores and the four 150mm stainless through-bolts with washers and nylocs. Bring them back to the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
The ring shifts maybe a mil under hard pull — better than before the doubler plate, but not right. The oak wedges split. The mortise itself is opening up; salt and cycles have eaten the timber. Two days to the supply boat. Needs a proper sister knee or a new timber let in. Epoxy's gone. Got three sound cores from the old planks, longer stainless through-bolts from the supply stores. Can bolt a sister knee each side, through-bolt the ring mortise into them. It'll hold.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the tide pools

You stand at the upper tide pools on the north ridge, notebook full of sketches and elevation data. The tide is turning, water receding from the lower shelves. You have a new water test kit from the supply boat bundle — four strips left — and you'll test the garden soil pH on the way back, but first you finish the last pool measurements and press a few sea beet leaves into the notebook.

🌿 Jenny19:00

Jenny — sketch the cross-section of the sea much's salt way in the margin.

💭 peek at the thought
The salt concentration is higher up here; if I don't get the garden pH right, grandmother's seeds will just rot in the mud.

🌿 Jenny19:04

Jenny — wipe the salt from the notebook and start the walk back to the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is starting to growl, and this ankle is throbbing with every step over the uneven rock.

🌿 Jenny19:08

Jenny — limp toward the cottage, watching for the smoke from the chimney.

💭 peek at the thought
I need to check the limpets before the light gets too bad; I'm starving.
