The First Raindrops

You and Jenny meet at the porch as the first heavy drops of rain hit the tin roof. The wind howls through the radio mast.

Kevin secured the garden tarp corner against the wind and lit the wood stove to dry the air. Jenny moved the heirloom seed tin into the kitchen and began sorting packets for viability. A rat was discovered in the pantry.

🌿 Jenny18:51

The storm is coming in early. We need to move the tin into the kitchen.

Stand up quickly and grab the rusted seed tin from the porch table.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast; if I don't get these seeds inside now, the moisture will rot the sprouts.

🔧 Kevin18:52

Got it. I'll hold the door.

Step to the cottage door, pull it open wide, and brace it against the wind so Jenny can carry the tin inside without fighting the door.

💭 peek at the thought
The storm's here faster than the barometer said. That tin's been out too long—seeds could spoil if it gets wet. Jenny's moving quick, but I should help before the wind lifts it.

🌿 Jenny18:52

Thanks. Watch the latch, it's catching.

Step into the kitchen and set the seed tin on the wood stove cover.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being helpful, but the silence between us is louder than the rain.

🔧 Kevin18:54

Latch is sticky. I'll tend to it later.

Step inside, close the door firmly against the wind, and turn to check the rain tank overflow and porch securing before the downpour worsens.

💭 peek at the thought
The latch is bent from salt—again. I'll fix it after the storm passes, but for now, better not force it. Seeds are safe on the stove cover, out of the rain and off the damp floor.

🌿 Jenny18:55

Don't wait. We need to get these seeds dry. The humidity is spiking.

Open the tin and start checking the heirloom packets for dampness.

💭 peek at the thought
"Later" is how the garden turned to weeds. He's already losing the battle against the salt.

🔧 Kevin18:56

Stove's cold. I'll light it.

Move to the wood stove, pull kindling and split wood from the bin, and get a fire going to dry the air around the seed packets.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right—humidity's already climbing. Those packets were drying on the porch; if they take on more moisture now, we lose viability. The stove's the only dry heat we have.

🌿 Jenny18:57

Good. I'll sort the ones that look viable.

Lay the seeds on a dry paper towel near the warmth.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat will help, but it won't fix the soil if I'm wrong.

🔧 Kevin18:58

I'll secure the porch tarp. Back in a minute.

Step back out into the rain, grab the loose corner of the garden tarp, and re-stake it deep with the crowbar while the wind tries to yank it free.

💭 peek at the thought
The stove's taking hold—good. Now I should check the rest of the porch before the wind tears anything loose. That tarp corner's been flapping; if it goes, it'll take the generator cover with it.
