Shelter from the squall

They are on the cottage porch, under the eaves, as rain drums on the roof and wind shakes the shutters. The kettle sits on the wood stove inside, still warm from earlier. Jenny’s damp hair clings to her forehead; Kevin wipes rain from his sleeves.

Kevin tested the Yanmar under load at slack tide and found a faint vibration above half throttle, likely from the skewed mast bracket. Jenny completed the north ridge Carex transect mapping and planted one seed from her grandmother's tin in a sheltered garden bed. Both returned to the cottage as evening fell.

The dock is holding for now, but that ring was screaming.

Jenny pulls a small pencil from her pocket and begins sketching the way the water sheets off the stone edge of the porch wall.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is going to drop again, I can feel it in my knees. I should be planting that seed, but I'm just standing here.

🔧 Kevin21:11

Held. Barely.

walk to the wood stove and lift the kettle, checking water level

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the ring was groaning under the chop. Two bolts bought us time, not forever. The mortise is still rotting underneath.

🌿 Jenny21:12

The bolts are deep enough for today. We need to check the tension before the next big one.

Jenny stops drawing and looks at the tin of seeds sitting on the table, her thumb tracing the rust in the metal.

💭 peek at the thought
Barely is an understatement; the wood is turning to mush anyway.

🔧 Kevin21:12

Aye. I'll check the torque again when the wind drops.

pour two mugs from the kettle, carry one to Jenny on the porch bench

💭 peek at the thought
She's thinking ahead — not just fixing, but learning how it fails. The seeds... she hasn't opened that tin since we got here. Keeps it close.

🌿 Jenny21:14

Don't wait too long. The salt is already in the grain.

Jenny takes the mug, the warmth seeping into her palms, and watches the grey blur of the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always checking the torque, never the rot inside the heart of the post.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:14

The post needs replacing. Not just shims.

lean against the porch post beside her, mug in hand, watching the ridge disappear into rain

💭 peek at the thought
She means the wood — the mortise post. Salt's eaten half the fibres already. Two bolts in rotten oak won't hold a winter gale.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:16

I know. The wood is soft at the core.

Jenny reaches into her pocket and pulls out the small tin of seeds, the metal cold against her damp palm.

💭 peek at the thought
Everything here is just being reclaimed by the salt, bit by bit.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:17

What's in it?

sip the mug, steam rising, eyes on the tin in her hand

💭 peek at the thought
She's turning it over. That tin's been in her pocket for days. Hasn't opened it. Hasn't said why.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:18

My grandmother's garden. Things that might not survive this island.

Jenny traces the edge of the tin but doesn't pop it open.

💭 peek at the thought
If I open it, I lose my grandmother's ghost if the soil kills them.

🔧 Kevin21:19

They'll grow if you put them in dirt.

set the mug on the porch rail, wipe rain from my beard

💭 peek at the thought
Her grandmother's seeds. She's carried them eleven months and never planted them. Scared they'll die here — or scared they'll live and she'll still be alone with them.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:20

The soil here is stubborn. I haven't checked.

Jenny looks down at the half-weeded garden behind the cottage, then back at the tin.

💭 peek at the thought
It's not just dirt, it's pH and salt and the wind.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:21

You checked it all. Spring tide, neap tide, after every storm.

step off the porch into the rain, walk toward the garden beds, motioning with my head

💭 peek at the thought
She's tested every bed for pH, mapped the salt gradient from shore to hilltop, knows which rows hold water and which bake dry. She knows the soil. She's not talking about soil.
