A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin drove two stainless through-bolts into the dock mooring ring mortise and torqued them to 35Nm, securing the ring. Jenny ate a tin of mackerel while Kevin heated water and rinsed his tin, then walked to the dock. A sudden squall swept in with wind and rain as they stood at the dock.

🌿 Jenny20:58

I'm starving.

Walk to the kitchen, open a tin of tinned mackerel, and sit at the table watching the clouds.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is growling loud enough to wake the birds, and that seed tin is still staring at me from the table.

🔧 Kevin20:58

Eat. I'll heat water.

walk to the wood stove, fill the kettle from the rain tank, set it on the stove, pull out a second tin of mackerel and a fork, sit opposite her at the table

💭 peek at the thought
She's been quiet all morning. The mackerel tin pops — she's hungry, not talking. I'll eat too, then get to the dock before the tide turns.

🌿 Jenny21:00

The clouds look heavy. Maybe it holds?

Push a piece of way onto the fork and look at the rusted tin of seeds sitting between us.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so quiet when he's focused, like the tide pulling back over stones.

🔧 Kevin21:00

Might break before dark. We should eat while we can.

tear open the mackerel tin, slide the fish onto my fork, chew slowly, watch her face — not the seeds, not the clouds, just her eyes for a second — then push my chair back and stand, taking the empty tin to the sink to rinse it quickly under

💭 peek at the thought
The seed tin again. She's thinking of the garden — of what we said we'd do. The clouds are low, but the barometer's steady. I won't let her see me hesitate.

🌿 Jenny21:02

It's always breaking something, is it?

Reach for the grandmother's seed tin, thumbing over the cold metal, feeling the weight of the things I haven't dared to plant yet.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always looking at the end of things, while I'm just thinking about the dirt.

🔧 Kevin21:02

The soil's ready. Beds are walled. Seeds are drying.

pick up my own empty tin, turn it over in my hands, set it down on the table between us — not pushing it toward her, not pulling it away — just letting it sit there while I wipe my fingers on a rag and head for the porch door

💭 peek at the thought
She means the garden. The promises. Me. The tin's heavy in her hands — heirloom seeds, damp but viable, drying on the porch. I said I'd build the beds. I said a lot of things.

🌿 Jenny21:04

Easy to say when the island actually wants to give something back.

Pick up the tin, fingers hovering over the lid, looking out at the half-weeded garden in the grey light.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's as simple as putting a hole in the ground.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:04

It's not the island. It's me.

step onto the porch, pull the door shut behind me, walk fast down the path to the dock, not looking back, hands in my pockets, boots hitting the planks — one, two, three — like I'm trying to outwalk the thought that I'm already too late.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not asking me to fix it. She's asking if I still believe we can. The tin's lid is loose under her thumb. I could open it. I could show her the seeds. But the garden's still weeds. I haven't earned that moment.

🌿 Jenny21:06

Everything breaks eventually, Kevin.

Lean against the railing of the dock, staring at the loose mooring ring, feeling the salt air on my skin.

💭 peek at the thought
He doesn't understand the weight of a seed that hasn't grown yet.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:06

Not today.

pull the two stainless through-bolts from my pocket, set them on the dock plank beside the mortise, crouch down, drive the first bolt home with the heavy wrench — *thunk* — then the second, torque each to 35Nm, check the ring: solid, no pla

💭 peek at the thought
She followed me. Or she was already here. The ring shifts under the bow line — I can see the play from here. Two 150mm bolts waiting in my pocket. The mortise is rotted. The doubler plate's ready. She's talking about the ring. She's not talking about the ring.
