Evening meal preparation

The tide has reached the dock pilings as Kevin meets Jenny at the cottage. They must prepare the remaining limpets and sea beet.

Kevin attempts to send the letter to Tom via the shortwave radio while the sky darkens over the cottage. Jenny checks the garden tarp, securing the corners against the rising humidity and the threat of impending rain.

🔧 Kevin23:14

Limpets are boiled. Sea beet's sorted. Skillet's still hot from the corned beef fat.

Walk into the kitchen, pull the pot of limpets off the stove, and set the cast iron skillet back on the wood stove to reheat.

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's right up to the pilings. Good — means the supply boat has water over the bar if it shows tomorrow. Need to get the limpets done before the stove cools.

🌿 Jenny23:15

Don't overcook the limpets, they turn to rubber.

Limp to the kitchen chair, wincing as the way catches the fabric, and prop the foot up on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the waves, and the smell of that salt is making my stomach growl.

They've had five minutes. Any more and you're eating boot leather.

Tip the limpets into a colander over the sink, shake the water off, then dump them straight into the hot skillet with the rendered corned beef fat. Toss in the sea beet after thirty seconds, stir fast with the wooden spoon.

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring it bad. Should've taped it tighter this morning. Or made her sit while I did the dock lines.

🌿 Jenny23:17

way me the salt.

Reach for the tin on the shelf, ignoring the sharp spike of pain in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm so hungry I could eat the notebook, but the heat in this kitchen is making me feel sick.

🔧 Kevin23:18

Here.

Take the salt tin from the shelf and set it on the table beside her chair, then return to the skillet and give the limpets and sea beet another quick toss.

💭 peek at the thought
Salt tin's right above her head. She shouldn't be reaching with that ankle.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny23:19

Thanks.

Shake a pinch of salt over the wayets and reach for a plate.

💭 peek at the thought
The way is pulsing through the bandage, and I just want to eat in silence before the rain starts coming down.

🔧 Kevin23:20

Chair's behind you.

Scoop the limpets and sea beet onto two plates, wipe the spoon on a rag, and set one plate on the table in front of her chair. Take the other to the porch door and lean against the frame, eating with the fork.

💭 peek at the thought
She's eating standing at the counter. Stubborn. Should sit.

🌿 Jenny23:21

It looks good.

Pick up a limpet with the fork, watching the clouds thicken over the eastern bluff.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is a lead weight, and the smell of the salt is the only thing keeping me grounded right now.

🔧 Kevin23:22

Eat it while it's hot.

Spear a limpet, pull the meat free with the fork, chew slow. Watch the same clouds.

💭 peek at the thought
Clouds stacking up over the bluff. Wind'll shift northeast by dark. Barometer's been honest all day.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny23:23

The sky is closing over fast.

Take a bite of the sea beet, wincing as the movement in my ankle throbs against the splint.

💭 peek at the thought
If the storm hits before the boat comes, I won't be able to reach the garden anyway.

🔧 Kevin23:24

Dock lines are doubled. Dinghy's got the second spring. We're tight.

Finish the limpets on the plate, scrape the last of the sea beet with the fork, set the plate on the porch railing.

💭 peek at the thought
Front's moving faster than the glass suggested. Northeast wind'll pile water against the dock by midnight.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny23:25

Good you checked.

Lean heavily against the doorframe, watching the first heavy drops of rain hit the dust.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so worried about the gear, but I'm the one that's falling apart.
