← Day 267

the keeper's cottage · day 267 · evening

The first drops of rain

The first heavy drops hit the dust on the tin roof, and the wind picks up from the east.

The rain lashes the cottage from the west as the pressure continues to drop. Kevin and Jenny share a meal of boiled limpets and sea beet while the storm intensifies outside. They discuss the coming supply boat and the state of the garden preparations.

🌿 Jenny00:29

Kevin, get the sketches! Now!

Scramble to the porch to grab the notebook and the charcoal pencils.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is coming faster than I can get the sketches inside. If the paper gets ruined, the whole day is wasted.

Kevin — walk to the porch, grab the notebook and charcoal pencils from the shelf, hand them to Jenny.

💭 peek at the thought
Rain on the roof means the front's here. She's moving fast — something she saw worth recording before it washes out.

🌿 Jenny00:31

Close the door. It's coming in hard.

Slam the porch door shut and clutch the notebook to my chest.

💭 peek at the thought
Thank god. At least the paper is dry before the salt gets to it.

🔧 Kevin00:31

Kevin — pull the porch door closed hard, latch it, turn back to the kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's shifting east, rain driving horizontal. She's right — door needs shutting before the porch floods.

🌿 Jenny00:33

I need to eat something before the storm hits. Is there any more mackerel left?

Sit heavily at the kitchen table and rub my swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast. My ankle is screaming, and I'm starving.

🔧 Kevin00:33

One tin left. I'll open it.

Walk to the shelf, pull down the last tin of mackerel, use the knife to open it, slide the plate toward her.

💭 peek at the thought
She's hungry, ankle's bad. Five tins of mackerel left — one won't hurt.

🌿 Jenny00:35

Thanks.

Take the fork and start eating the mackerel, watching the rain blur the window.

💭 peek at the thought
One tin. That's it for the next week if the boat doesn't show.

🔧 Kevin00:35

Kevin — walk to the porch door, unlatch, step out onto the porch to check generator straps and rain tank overflow, pull door shut behind me.

💭 peek at the thought
She's eating slow, watching the storm come in. Ankle's swollen bad. Should check the generator's lashed down and the tank's not taking on debris.

🌿 Jenny00:37

Don't stay out there too long!

Chew a piece of fish and look at the sea beet sketches in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is turning. If the tank overflows, I'll have to clean the sediment tomorrow.

🔧 Kevin00:37

Generator's secure. Tank's clear.

Step back through the porch door, latch it, shake water off my hands, lean against the kitchen wall.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching me through the glass. Rain's cold, wind biting. Generator's fine — straps tight. Tank overflow running clear. Back inside.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:39

Come in. Sit down. You're soaked.

Push the plate of way toward him across the table.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the water is full. I'm so hungry I can barely swallow.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:39

Kevin — pull out the chair, sit, pick up the fork, eat the rest of the mackerel.

💭 peek at the thought
Shirt's wet through at the shoulders. Plate's got half the mackerel left. She's pushing it toward me — not asking.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:41

It's the last of it. We have to stretch until the boat.

Watch him eat, my ankle throbbing in time with the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
He's quiet tonight. The radio static is the only thing between us.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:41

Seven days. We've done longer.

Finish the last bite, wipe the plate clean with a finger, set the fork down.

💭 peek at the thought
Seven days till the boat's due. Five tins corned beef, flour's gone, limpets at low tide if the swell allows. We'll stretch.
