NIGHT: The Storm Peaks

The wind howls through the eaves, and the cottage groans as the pressure continues to fall through overnight.

The air thickens as the flat sky turns a heavy, bruised purple. The barometer continues its slow descent to 978 hPa, signaling the imminent arrival of the front. Inside the cottage, the smell of drying sea beet and salt hangs in the air while the tide recedes, exposing the slick rocks of the island.

I’m going to check the porch lashings and bring the liferaft inside. You stay off that ankle.

walk to the porch, grab the liferaft canister, carry it inside and stow it under the bench, then return to secure the loose tarp corner with a half-hitch and a spare line from the coil.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure’s down to 975 hPa and still falling. This front’s going to hit hard. I should’ve secured the liferaft canister yesterday—it’s still lashed loose on the porch. And Jenny’s ankle’s worse than she let on; she winced when she stood to stir the limpets.

The tank is holding, but keep an eye on the radio.

Jenny wraps a clean cloth in cold water from the basin and presses it tightly against her swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind gets any worse, the salt will kill the sea beets before they even see the light.

Radio's dead until I fit the spare insulator. You need to keep that elevated. Proper elevated — pillows under the calf, foot above heart.

walk to the bedroom, grab two pillows and the wool blanket, bring them back and arrange them on the bench, then sit beside her and gently lift her leg into place.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the radio — the cracked insulator means we're deaf on receive, blind on transmit. But her ankle's hot to the touch even through the cloth. That's not just a sprain.

I know. Just don't let the roof leak.

Jenny leans back against the stone wall, closing her eyes as the cold compress seeps into the throbbing joint.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so practical when the world is falling, as if a pillow can hold the storm back.
