Evening as the storm breaks

Kevin and Jenny gather inside as the first drops of rain hit the corrugated metal roof. The barometer finally begins to drop.

The air is heavy and humid as the flat sky thickens with cloud cover, signaling an approaching storm as the barometer continues to drop to 977 hPa. At the shrine, the tide is receding rapidly, exposing the rocky floor of the tide pools while Kevin and Jenny prepare for the weather turn.

🔧 Kevin02:18

Radio's live. Picked up a weather fax on 8 MHz — front's stalled, could sit two days. You need to stay off that ankle proper now. I'll wrap it when the kettle's on.

walk to the cottage porch and set the ladder down, then go inside to the kitchen to fill the kettle and set it on the stove

💭 peek at the thought
Pressure's falling for real now. Rain on the roof means the front's sitting on us. Radio's back up — insulator's seated, coax splice taped, mast braced. That's one less thing to fail. Jenny's ankle needs wrapping proper, not the driftwood splint. And the letter to Tom's still folded on the table. One honest line. That's all I said I'd write.

🌿 Jenny02:19

I'm already sitting. Just don't make me move.

Sit in the kitchen chair, prop the swollen ankle up on a stool, and open the notebook to the sea beet sketches.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat stalls, the seeds will rot in that tin before I ever find the grit to plant them.

🔧 Kevin02:20

Tea first. Then the ankle. Then I write one line to Tom.

take the kettle off the stove when it whistles, pour two mugs, set one by Jenny's chair, and pull the self-amalgamating tape from the radio shelf

💭 peek at the thought
She's not arguing. That's new. Ankle's bad enough she'll let it be. Kettle's heating. Tape's on the radio shelf. Letter's on the table. One thing at a time.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:21

The tea smells like the garden back home. Thank you.

Take the mug, wrap both hands around the ceramic for warmth, and watch the rain blur against the windowpane.

💭 peek at the thought
I've spent eleven months talking about a garden and I'm still too terrified to put a single seed in the dirt.

🔧 Kevin02:22

Hold still. This'll pull a bit going on.

unwrap the driftwood splint and fabric strips from Jenny's ankle, examine the swelling, then wrap it clean with the self-amalgamating tape — firm but not tight, overlapping each turn — and smooth the end down

💭 peek at the thought
She's quiet. The kind of quiet that means she's holding something. Tea's steeped. Ankle's propped. Tape in hand. Letter's still folded on the table. I'll wrap her foot first — give the silence something useful to sit in.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:23

It's already better than the chafing.

Take a slow sip of the tea, lean back against the chair, and watch the steam rise in the dim light.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so careful. It makes me feel like a thing made of glass today.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin02:24

I'm going to write that line to Tom now.

pull the chair out at the table, unfold the letter, pick up the pen, and write: "Tom — still here. Still breathing. Kevin." then fold it back up and set it beside the radio log

💭 peek at the thought
Ankle's wrapped. She's settled. Tea's hot. The letter's right there on the table — folded, addressed, waiting. One honest line. That's what I told myself. The rain's steady on the roof. Radio's live in the other room. Supply boat's five days out if it comes. Tom's frequency is 7.185 MHz. I know it by heart.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:25

Tell him the island is holding us.

Trace the edge of a sea beet salt gland drawing in the notebook with a finger, feeling the indentation of the pencil.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come in five days, I'll run out of hope.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin02:26

He'll hear it in the signal report.

💭 peek at the thought
She said it quiet, not looking at me. The island holding us. Not the other way round. Pen's still in my hand. Letter's folded. One line became two words and a name. I could add hers. Or not. The rain's hitting the roof harder now. Radio's humming static in the other room.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:27

I hope he does.

Take another sip of tea and listen to the rain pick up on the roof.

💭 peek at the thought
I hope he hears the silence between the words, too.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin02:28

I'll log the weather fax in the radio book. You finish the tea.

walk to the radio desk in the corner, open the logbook, and write down the 8 MHz fax details — front stalled, winds west 25-30 gusting 40, pressure 977 falling, visibility poor — then set the pen down and listen to the static

💭 peek at the thought
She hopes. That's the first time she's said hope about anything outside this cottage in months. The letter sits folded. My name's on it. Her words aren't. The rain's steady now — proper front moving through. Radio's live. Barometer's still dropping. Five days to the supply boat if it shows. I should check the log, see if the fax gave a wind forecast worth noting.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:29

The storm's going to be big.

Prop the ankle up on a cushion and watch the clouds swallow the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping so fast. way like my stomach.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin02:31

Mast bracket held the last one. Coax splice is the weak point. I'll run a second safety line from the mast base to the eyebolt on the shed. Dock ring'll shift — nothing to do but check the dinghy lines are doubled.

walk to the porch door, pull on the oilskin jacket hanging by the frame, and step outside into the rain to tie a second safety line from the mast base to the shed eyebolt, cinching it tight with a round turn and two half hitches

💭 peek at the thought
She's reading the sky better than the fax. Clouds swallowing the ridge, pressure dropping, wind already backing west. Big storm. The mast bracket held last time — epoxy and through-bolts from three years ago. But the coax splice is new, the porcelain insulator's untested in a blow. Dock mooring ring's shimmed with oak wedges that split. Dinghy's on the hard but the engine's faint vibration above half throttle hasn't been diagnosed. Generator's smooth. Liferaft canopy crumbled. We're as ready as we'll be.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:31

Be careful, the rocks are slick.

Watch him through the window, tracing the outline of the seed tin on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always fixing things while I'm just cataloging the decay.
