The Storm Arrives

The wind picks up and the first heavy drops of wet-season rain hit the roof.

The air is heavy and humid as the flat sky thickens with dark clouds, signaling a coming front. Inside the cottage, the smell of damp wood and drying herbs hangs in the air while the tide sits out at its lowest, exposing the slick rocks and kelp of the tide pools.

🌿 Jenny02:33

Kevin, check the porch door latch again.

Stands up with a wince, moves the heirloom seed tin to the warmest part of the wood stove, and sits back down to rub her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The storm is coming faster than the barometer said. If those seeds stay damp, they'll rot before I even try the dirt.

Done. Brass screw bit solid. Latch catches clean.

Walk to the porch door, test the latch from outside, pull it firm to confirm the hold, then step back inside and set the kettle on the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
Door held with the brass screw. But she's asking, so I'll check it again — and she's moving the seed tin herself, not waiting for me. That ankle's worse than she lets on.

🌿 Jenny02:35

I need to check the rain tank once the wind dies.

Pulls her notebook close and begins a frantic sketch of the swelling on her ankle, her hand shaking slightly.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is getting heavy now. If the roof leaks, the whole tin is ruined.

Wind's backing west, not dropping. Tank's fine — near full. Sit still.

Pour water into the kettle, set it on the stove, then tear a clean strip of muslin and the self-amalgamating tape from the shelf and kneel at her feet.

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's not dying — it's building. Tank's at 391, near full. She's documenting the ankle like it's a transect. Hand shaking. She knows.
