The Calm Before

Kevin and Jenny prepare for the night as the evening temperature drops slightly. The radio log remains the priority for the morning.

Dawn breaks over Sorrel Island with a clear sky and a steady trade wind. The tide is still receding, exposing the shallows off the dock where a silver school of fish flickers in the low-clear water.

🔧 Kevin17:18

Radio at dawn. You want first listen or the log?

Walk to the porch and check the barometer reading by lantern light.

💭 peek at the thought
Night's settling. Radio log first thing — if the insulator holds at dawn, I'll get the shipping forecast and Tom's frequency. Jenny's quiet again. She carved something into that spruce scrap. Might ask. Might not. The letter to Tom's still in the bag, unsealed. One more day won't change eleven months.

The log. I'll have the entries before you wake up.

Sit at the kitchen table and open the tin of heirloom seeds, tracing the edge of one with a thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the schedule, but the soil is still damp and the seeds are just sitting there in the tin.

🔧 Kevin17:20

Right. Coffee'll be on.

Hang the lantern on its hook, pull the porch door shut against the cooling wind, and head to the bedroom to strip down for sleep.

💭 peek at the thought
She'll have the log done before I'm up. Good. Means I can focus on the insulator at first light without the paperwork. She's tracing that seed tin edge like it's a compass. Still hasn't asked about the shrine or the stone marked E. I'll leave the letter on the radio shelf — she'll see it, or she won't.

🌿 Jenny17:20

Don't forget the water level.

Take a single seed from the tin and hold it up to the dim light, inspecting its tiny, potential life.

💭 peek at the thought
If I plant them tomorrow, and the salt kills them, I will have own left to give this island.

🔧 Kevin17:22

Won't forget.

Pause at the bedroom door, glance back at the kitchen table where the seed tin sits open, then step inside and close the door.

💭 peek at the thought
Water level. Tank's at 391. She knows. She's reminding me because the radio log means dawn start, and dawn start means I'll forget the basics. That seed in her fingers — pepper, maybe, or one of the tomatoes. She's deciding whether it lives or burns.

🌿 Jenny17:23

Jenny — place the seed back in the tin and close the lid with a soft click.

💭 peek at the thought
The silence after the door closes is louder than the wind.

🔧 Kevin17:24

Kevin — lie down on the narrow bed, pull the wool blanket to my chin, and stare at the ceiling beams until sleep takes the edges off.

💭 peek at the thought
Tin's shut. Kitchen's quiet but for the wind finding gaps in the stone. She didn't say goodnight. We don't. The letter to Tom sits in my coat pocket on the porch hook — should've left it on the radio shelf like I thought. Tomorrow. Dawn. Insulator first, then the log, then the supply boat frequency if the air holds.

🌿 Jenny17:25

Jenny — close my eyes and listen to the trade wind steady against the stone walls.

💭 peek at the thought
My back aches from the lime-beds and the salt-air.
