← Day 285

Evening meal and shared quiet

They meet at the keeper's cottage as the sun lowers. Kevin brings the dinghy up to the dock to rinse the engine with fresh water, then walks inland. Jenny is at the stove, reheating a portion of boiled limpets with a spoon. The air is still, the sky clear, and the tide begins its slow turn from high.

The sky thickens with heavy, flat clouds as the 31°C heat begins to hold. Inside the cottage, the tide is receding, leaving the salt-streaked rocks exposed. Kevin flushes the Yanmar engine block with fresh water while Jenny sketches the intricate veins of a sea beet in her notebook.

Engine held. Clean idle. I'll rinse the salt off the block before dark.

walk up to the cottage porch, set the starter cord coil on the bench, pull the kettle off the stove and pour hot water into the bucket for the engine flush

💭 peek at the thought
Engine sounded clean. No vibration at idle. Good. Now the radio. And the letter.

🌿 Jenny17:10

The barometer is holding steady. Eat something while it's still warm.

Jenny slides the plate of limpets across the wooden table, sits across from him, and begins to sketch the morphology of the sea much leaves in her notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He's tired of the salt, and I'm tired of the waiting. I hope that seed actually takes the lime.

🔧 Kevin17:11

Barometer's good. Held through the tide. I'll take a bite.

pick up the spoon, scoop a limpets onto it, blow on it once, then eat slowly while watching her sketch the leaf veins in the notebook

💭 peek at the thought
She didn't ask about the letter. Or the radio. Just the barometer and food. Like she's giving me space to speak first.

🌿 Jenny17:13

The boat is in nine days. We need to check the radio log tomorrow.

Jenny pauses her pencil, looking out the window at the thickening clouds then back to the sketch of the sea beet.

💭 peek at the thought
If the soil is too acidic, it won't even stand a chance against the salt.

🔧 Kevin17:15

Checked the log yesterday. Last entry was the supply boat ETA. Nothing since. Insulator's the blocker. I'll fit the spare at first light — dawn air's still, seal'll hold better.

finish the limpets, set the spoon down, reach for the tin of coffee on the shelf, measure grounds into the pot, set it on the stove to heat

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Nine days. Radio's dead without the insulator. I have the spare ceramic from the spark plug box but it needs fitting and sealing. Tomorrow at dawn, air still — best chance to get it right.

🌿 Jenny17:15

I'll help with the radio log after I finish this sketch.

Jenny closes the notebook with a soft thud, rubs the pencil graphite off her thumb, and looks at the half-eaten limpets on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
Nine days always feels like it's been nine months. I hope the boat actually comes.

🔧 Kevin17:16

You eat. I'll pour the coffee. (pause) The sketch — is that the northern fringe? Where the beet meets the rock?

pour hot water into the French press, let it steep, then press slowly, watching the steam rise in the quiet cottage

💭 peek at the thought
She's giving me an opening. Not about the radio. Not yet. About the limpets. About the silence. I should say something real.

🌿 Jenny17:16

Yes. The plants are stunted there.

Jenny nods, tracing the edge of the sketched leaf in the notebook with a finger before reaching for her mug.

💭 peek at the thought
It's the northern fringe. The salt spray is thickest there. If they can survive that, they can survive anything.
