Evening at the hearth

The kitchen fills with the smell of salt and woodsmoke as Kevin and Jenny sit to eat. Outside, the sound of the tide lapping against the submerged dock pilings.

The steady rain continues to hammer the roof as the water tank reaches its capacity. Kevin struggles with the radio insulator, failing to set the seal properly, while Jenny successfully organizes the heirloom seeds against the damp air.

🌿 Jenny18:08

The tide is high enough that we won't be moving the boat tomorrow.

Jenny slides the plate of limpets toward Kevin and watches his hands.

💭 peek at the thought
If I plant these now, and the soil is too acidic, I'll at least know I tried to start.

🔧 Kevin18:09

Aye. Not with the pilings submerged. We'll lose a prop if we try.

eat limpets steadily, wiping fingers on a cloth, then push the empty plate back and reach for the coffee jar

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching me eat like I'm a gauge she's learning to read. The limpets are good — sweet, briny, better with the corned beef fat. Eight days until the supply boat. The radio's still dead. The dock ring held today but the mortise is widening. She said we won't move the boat tomorrow. She's right. High tide covers the lower planks, makes the approach treacherous. We wait.

🌿 Jenny18:10

The boat is still eight days out anyway.

Jenny taps the heirloom seed tin on the center of the table.

💭 peek at the thought
He's thinking about the engine, and I'm thinking about the rot.

🔧 Kevin18:10

Eight days. Plenty of time to get the insulator fixed and the letter sealed.

lift the seed tin slightly, turn it so the rusted seam faces up, then set it back down gently without opening it

💭 peek at the thought
She's drawing a line — eight days. Not just about the boat. About the letter. About the silence. The seed tin between us. Damp seeds inside. Viable, but need tending. Like us.

🌿 Jenny18:12

I'm going to check the moisture in the bed before the rain stops.

Jenny stands up, grabs her notebook, and heads for the door.

💭 peek at the thought
He sees a radio and a letter; I see the end of the garden.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin18:13

Take the headlamp. Tide's still high on the path.

pour the last of the coffee into two mugs, set one at her place, and start wiping down the table with a damp cloth

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving. Good. The garden's her language — pH strips, damping-off counts, salt gland sketches. She speaks in soil and seedling. I'll let her go. The rain's easing. Barometer rising. I've got the insulator to finish, the letter to seal. The radio needs testing at dawn when the air's still. Eight days.

🌿 Jenny18:14

I'll be back before the tank is full.

Jenny takes the headlamp from the hook and steps out into the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
way doesn't see the way the water is already turning the soil into soup.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin18:15

(no reply — just the sound of rain on the roof)

take the spare spark plug from the shelf, file the ceramic insulator free, then mix a small batch of epoxy on a scrap of tin and set it aside to thicken slightly

💭 peek at the thought
She's gone. The tank's filling — rain's steady, the inlet clear. She said before it's full. Not long. I'll have the insulator done by then. The letter needs sealing. Beeswax and pine resin won't hold. I'll use the spark plug ceramic and epoxy like the log says. First light. But I can prep now.
