A Night in the Rain

The rain tapers to a drizzle as the tide begins to turn. Kevin and Jenny sit by the small stove, watching the chick shiver in a basket.

The heavy humid air hangs still over the cottage as the tide recedes from the shore. Kevin focuses on the radio mast, finally securing the porcelain insulator into place, while Jenny manages the drying heirloom seeds to ensure no rot sets in the heat.

🌿 Jenny18:17

It's warm enough in here for now.

Jenny reaches out to tuck a wool scrap tighter around the chick's wings.

💭 peek at the thought
If I plant just one, tomorrow, will the soil actually hold it or am I just stalling?

It’ll feather out soon. Keep it off the stone floor—draws the heat right out.

lift the basket onto the wooden stool by the stove, then pull my coat tighter and stare at the radio shelf, waiting for the insulator to hold.

💭 peek at the thought
The chick's trembling pulls at something old—watching life fight the cold reminds me of that forty minutes in the Biscay, salt in my throat, knowing if I stopped moving I’d disappear. Jenny’s hands are steady, mending what she can. I should say something that doesn’t vanish into the damp.

It's on the stool. It's fine.

Jenny turns back to the stove and stirs the remaining limpets in the skillet.

💭 peek at the thought
He's obsessing over that radio again. It's fixed, Kevin. Stop looking at it.

🔧 Kevin18:18

Right. Sorry.

pull out the other stool and sit heavily, letting the warmth from the stove hit my face, watching the steam rise from the skillet.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. It's on the stool. My hands want to keep adjusting things that don't need it.

🌿 Jenny18:20

Eat, before they get cold.

Jenny plates a portion of limpets and sea beet, sliding it across the table to him.

💭 peek at the thought
He's quiet when he's tired. I should just let him eat the food.

🔧 Kevin18:20

Thanks. (I pick up the fork, but don't eat yet.) You carved something in the wood today. What was it?

keep my eyes on her, waiting, fork limp in my hand.

💭 peek at the thought
The food's there. I haven't tasted anything since this morning's boiled limpets, and the silence between us feels wider than the table.
