Dinner and Debrief

Both of you are in the cottage kitchen, preparing a meal of boiled limpets and corned beef. The stove is working, and you sit at the table to discuss the engine test results and plan the next steps for the dock.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

🔧 Kevin18:47

Engine held under load, but there’s a faint vibration—like a heartbeat out of rhythm. I think the prop shaft’s still slightly bent, or the mast bracket’s tweaking it under torque. I’ll pull it apart tomorrow if the weather holds.

Stir the pot of limpets and corned beef, checking if they’re tender.

💭 peek at the thought
The engine vibration is bothering me—it’s not dangerous, but it’s a sign something’s still off. I should check the prop shaft alignment again when I get a chance. Jenny’s quiet, but she’s here. That counts for something.

🌿 Jenny18:48

Check the bracket bolts while you're out there. I don't want the vibration shearing the housing threads.

sketch the sea beet's cotyledon in the notebook while waiting for the water.

💭 peek at the thought
If the shaft is bent, the whole assembly will chew itself apart eventually; we can't afford being stranded out here again.

🔧 Kevin18:49

Will do. The doubler plate's holding, but the through-bolts could work loose if the alignment's off. I'll check them at slack tide.

Lift the pot lid, spear a limpet with the fork, and pull the meat out in one slow twist.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The housing threads are already compromised — two stripped, one lost in the bilge. If that bracket shifts under load, it'll tear the rest out. I should torque them while the engine's cold, before the swell builds.

🌿 Jenny18:50

Just make sure you use the cedar wedges this time. If that ring pulls, the dinghy is lost to the surge.

eat a piece of limpet, staring at the grey light outside the window.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the metal, but the salt is eating the wood around it.

🔧 Kevin18:50

Cedar won’t hold — it’s already split. The steel plate’s taking the load. I’ll inspect the wedges, but if they’re gone, we ride it till the boat comes. Better than risking a worse jam.

Eat the limpet, chew slow, then wipe my hands on my trousers and stand up from the table.

💭 peek at the thought
Cedar wedges split last time. They’re useless in salt-swollen wood. I need oak or nothing — but the dock mortise is already chewed. Steel doubler plate’s the only thing holding it now. I can’t pretend otherwise.

🌿 Jenny18:52

If the ring pulls, I'm not swimming for the dinghy in this current. Just check the bolts.

walk to the porch and watch the tide creep up the stone steps.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so optimistic about the hardware while the wood is literally turning to mush under it.

🔧 Kevin18:53

I’ll go now. Slack’s in twenty minutes.

Pull on my boots, grab the heavy wrench from the shelf, and step out onto the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s not wrong. The current’s running hard on the flood, and the water’s cold enough to stop your heart in minutes. I’ve been in it. I know. The bolts are the only thing I can control. I’ll check them now, before the tide lifts the dinghy and tests the ring for real.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny18:54

Watch the bracket. If it starts jumping, come back in immediately.

sit on the porch step and open the notebook to a fresh page.

💭 peek at the thought
Twenty minutes isn't enough if the vibration starts shearing the bolts.

🔧 Kevin18:54

I’ll be quick. If it jumps, I’m back.

Walk down the cottage path to the dock, keeping low against the wind, and step onto the planks.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s watching me. Not just the tide. I’ll move fast, check the bolts, and get back before the flood makes it dangerous. No point risking it for a tweak that can wait.

🌿 Jenny18:56

Jenny — sketch the salt glands of the sea beet seed, focusing on the crystalline structure.

💭 peek at the thought
He's out there alone on a dock that's basically a sponge.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin18:57

(Nothing — I’m working.)

Fit the wrench to the nearest through-bolt and turn it slowly clockwise, feeling for resistance.

💭 peek at the thought
The dock’s quiet. Just the lap of water and the creak of old timber under my weight. I crouch by the mooring ring, wrench in hand. The steel plate’s solid, but I need to see if the bolts have turned.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny18:58

Be careful. Don't snap the head.

watch the mooring ring for any movement against the tide.

💭 peek at the thought
If that bolt doesn't give, the wood is already gone.
